- The Titanic expeditions : diving to the queen of the deep, 1985-2010 / by Nesmeyanov, Eugene,author.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 260-299)."The remains of the world's most famous passenger liner, RMS Titanic, were discovered off the coast of Newfoundland in 1985, seventy-three years after it sank; since then there have been numerous deep-water expeditions to the wreck site. Yet, not much has been revealed about the details of these operations until now. Here, Eugene Nesmeyanov recounts all the major Titanic expeditions from 1985 to 2010 for the first time, taking us on a journey alongside the scientists, cinematographers and other specialists who have visited the legendary wreck 2 and a half miles below the surface of the North Atlantic. A thorough analysis of the sophisticated technical equipment used is presented, along with historical, biological and other scientific findings, and rare material from official archives and private collections"--Publisher description.

- Street-fighting mathematics : the art of educated guessing and opportunistic problem solving / by Mahajan, Sanjoy,1969-(CARDINAL)497515;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 123-125) and index.In problem solving, as in street fighting, rules are for fools: do whatever works?don't just stand there! Yet we often fear an unjustified leap even though it may land us on a correct result. Traditional mathematics teaching is largely about solving exactly stated problems exactly, yet life often hands us partly defined problems needing only moderately accurate solutions. This engaging book is an antidote to the rigor mortis brought on by too much mathematical rigor, teaching us how to guess answers without needing a proof or an exact calculation.In Street-Fighting Mathematics, Sanjoy Mahajan builds, sharpens, and demonstrates tools for educated guessing and down-and-dirty, opportunistic problem solving across diverse fields of knowledge?from mathematics to management. Mahajan describes six tools: dimensional analysis, easy cases, lumping, picture proofs, successive approximation, and reasoning by analogy. Illustrating each tool with numerous examples, he carefully separates the tool?the general principle?from the particular application so that the reader can most easily grasp the tool itself to use on problems of particular interest.Street-Fighting Mathematics grew out of a short course taught by the author at MIT for students ranging from first-year undergraduates to graduate students ready for careers in physics, mathematics, management, electrical engineering, computer science, and biology. They benefited from an approach that avoided rigor and taught them how to use mathematics to solve real problems.

- Last second in Dallas / by Thompson, Josiah,author.(CARDINAL)122722;
Includes bibliographical references and index."Last Second in Dallas reveals new forensic discoveries since 2000 that overturn previously accepted "facts" about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy: that at least some the bullets recovered from the scene were not specifically tied to Lee Harvey Oswald's rifle; that the two-inch forward movement on Zapruder slides Z 312 and Z 313 was an optical illusion, and so the shot in Z 313 came from the grassy knoll; that there were two shots to the President's head that hit in the final second of the assassination; and that the Ramsey Panel's 1982 analysis of acoustic evidence was fundamentally flawed. Together they provide undeniable evidence that JFK was killed in a crossfire. An established figure in the realm of JFK assassination studies, Thompson combines the story of this investigation with numerous personal anecdotes as he walks the reader through his experience of the assassination, his subsequent publications on the event, his lengthy gap in publication on the topic, and his return to the evidence. The work itself focuses on the forensic evidence and does not offer any conspiracy theories or ad hominem attacks. More than 250 photographs, charts, tables, and diagrams support the book's central argument, including the best-quality reproductions of the Zapruder film ever created. Two appendices in the book present scientific analysis conducted by Thompson and acoustics experts Dr. James E. Barger and Richard Mullen"--

- The breakthrough : politics and race in the age of Obama / by Ifill, Gwen.(CARDINAL)431921;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 247-264) and index.Breaking through -- The generational divide -- Barack Obama -- The race/gender clash -- Artur Davis -- Legacy politics -- Cory Booker -- The politics of identity -- Deval Patrick -- The next wave.Veteran journalist Ifill sheds new light on the impact of Barack Obama's presidential victory and introduces the emerging African American politicians forging a new path to political power. Ifill argues that the Black political structure formed during the Civil Rights movement is giving way to a generation who are the direct beneficiaries of the struggles of the 1960s. She offers detailed profiles of such prominent leaders as Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, and U.S. Congressman Artur Davis of Alabama, as well as numerous up-and-coming figures. Drawing on exclusive interviews with power brokers such as President Obama, Colin Powell, Vernon Jordan, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, his son Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., and many others, as well as her own observations and analysis of such issues as generational conflict, the race/gender clash, and the "black enough" conundrum, Ifill shows why this is a pivotal moment in history.--From publisher description.

- Classification of features of pavement profiles using empirical mode decomposition. by Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center,issuing body.(CARDINAL)286897;
Includes bibliographical references (page 15)."The Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) database contains surface profile data for numerous pavements that are used mainly for computing International Roughness Index (IRI). In order to obtain more information from these surface profiles, a Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) based surface profile algorithm was developed to analyze LTPP field road profile data in order to extract smoothed, consistent profiles from noise-filled data sets using empirical mode decomposition (EMD). The application of this algorithm to concrete surface profiles resulted in the successful separation of the intrinsic mode functions contained within the profile data for several LTPP pavement test sections from Wisconsin, Arizona, and Utah. Arizona was the only test section where the profiles showed consistent "curl" deflections for the same slab over a 20-month timespan and during both winter and early fall seasons. The consistent slab shape is likely due to built-in curl. Built-in curl is defined as permanent concrete slab deformation that occurs early in the life of the pavement. By categorizing and separating intrinsic mode functions contained within LTPP profile data, the results can be used to analyze specific portions of LTPP surface profile data in order to improve concrete pavement models in the future. Currently, no comprehensive procedure exists to model or estimate long-term, effective built-in curling. The developed surface profile algorithm that has proven to be universal can be applied to any LTPP profile data for analysis."

- Religions of the world : an introduction to culture and meaning / by Sullivan, Lawrence Eugene,1949-editor of compilation.(CARDINAL)756265;
Includes bibliographical references and index.Contemporary introductions to the study of religion generally align with either historical or phenomenological approaches. Increasingly, however, methodologies from the social sciences are being employed. This new survey text for comparative religion, authored and edited by Lawrence Sullivan, successfully marries traditional approaches with analysis drawn from anthropology and sociology to explain the making of meaning in leading religious traditions. Within this full-color text, sacred space, ritual performance, and sacred texts figure in each religious tradition's portrait, along with historical overviews and phenomenological insights, to show the rich diversity of religious belief and practice. Distinctive in this volume are separate chapters on the diversity of Christianity across the globe. Features include numerous photographs of art and artifacts, maps, timelines, tables, textboxes, pedagogy, and a glossary.

Summary: Six Essentials.Flintknapping, the making of stone tools, is an ancient craft enjoying a resurgence of interest among both amateur and professional students of prehistoric cultures. In this new guide, John C. Whittaker offers the most detailed handbook on flintknapping currently available and the only one written from the archaeological perspective of interpreting stone tools as well as making them. Flintknapping contains detailed, practical information on making stone tools. Whittaker starts at the beginner level and progresses to discussion of a wide range of techniques. He includes information on necessary tools and materials, as well as step-by-step instructions for making several basic stone tool types. Numerous diagrams allow the reader to visualize the flintknapping process, and drawings of many stone tools illustrate the discussions and serve as models for beginning knappers.Whittaker also considers the archaeological value of stone tools as a record of the history of past cultures and of the development of tool technology through time and its human consequences. He includes numerous references to scholarly and more general literature and an extensive bibliography for readers who wish to pursue these topics further. Written for a wide amateur and professional audience, Flintknapping will be essential for practicing knappers as well as for teachers of the history of technology, experimental archaeology, and stone tool analysis.
