- Pollutant loadings and impacts from highway stormwater runoff. by Driscoll, Eugene D.(CARDINAL)329372; Shelley, Philip E.(CARDINAL)329371; Strecker, Eric W.(CARDINAL)329370; United States.Federal Highway Administration.Office of Engineering & Highway Operations Research and Development.(CARDINAL)286896; Woodward-Clyde Consultants.(CARDINAL)285140;
Includes bibliographical references (page 39).Introduction -- Site characteristics -- Highway runoff characteristics -- Stream impact analysis -- Lake impact analysis -- Further analysis iterations -- Example use of design worksheets -- References -- Appendix A: Estimating pollutant concentrations -- Appendix B: Description of procedure -- Appendix C: Numerical example.Final report;This is one of four final documents of an investigation dealing with the characterization of stormwater runoff pollutant loads from highways, and the prediction of water quality impacts they cause. Study results are based on monitoring data from 993 individual storm events at 31 highway runoff sites in 11 States. Impact prediction is based on a methodology previously developed and applied to urban runoff and adapted for highway runoff applications. This document provides a step-by-step procedure for computing the estimated impacts on water quality of a stream or lake that receives highway runoff. Guidance is provided for evaluating whether or not a water quality problem will result, and the degree of pollution control required to mitigate impacts to acceptable levels.Sponsored by Office of Engineering and Highway Operations R&D, Federal Highway Administration, and performed by Woodward-Clyde Consultants for the Federal Highway Administration, contract no.

- Experimental and numerical simulation of the use of fiber reinforced composite materials for road side safety applications / by Tabiei, Ala.; United States.Federal Highway Administration.(CARDINAL)139839; Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center.(CARDINAL)286897;
Includes bibliographical references (page 83).Part I. Experimental analysis: Introduction -- Description of the experiment -- Experimental results -- Discussion and conclusion. Part II. Numerical simulation: Introduction -- Finite element model -- Tests and numerical simulation -- Discussion and conclusion -- Final remarks and recommendation -- References.Final report;The Federal Highway Administration is currently investigating the potential of using fiber reinforced composite materials for applications in highway structures. The feasibility and application of composite materials are analyzed through a series of impact tests on laboratory specimens and numerical simulation. The investigation is conducted in two parts. The objective of the first part is to determine the impact characteristics and failure modes of pultruded box-beams under impact loads. The loading rate sensitivity of pultruded box-beams with different resin systems is investigated. The second study is a numerical simulation of a series of impact tests of steel guardrails.Sponsored by Office of Safety and Traffic Operations R&D, Federal Highway Administration, under grant no.

- Single digits : in praise of small numbers / by Chamberland, Marc,1964-(CARDINAL)409578;
Includes bibliographical references and index."The numbers one through nine have remarkable mathematical properties and characteristics. For instance, why do eight perfect card shuffles leave a standard deck of cards unchanged? Are there really "six degrees of separation" between all pairs of people? And how can any map need only four colors to ensure that no regions of the same color touch? In Single Digits, Marc Chamberland takes readers on a fascinating exploration of small numbers, from one to nine, looking at their history, applications, and connections to various areas of mathematics, including number theory, geometry, chaos theory, numerical analysis, and mathematical physics." --Amazon.com.
