- Jewellery in Israel : multicultural diversity, 1948 to the present / by Fishof, Iris,author.(CARDINAL)199475; Adi, Einat,editor,translator.(CARDINAL)898999; Arnoldsche Art Publishers,publisher.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 220-223) and index.In Israel East meets West. Their jewelry traditions blend, resulting in creative innovations. In the 1930s, European immigrants to Palestine introduced the spirit of the Bauhaus, while Islamic craftsmanship was invigorated in the 1950s and 1960s by immigration from North African and Southwest Asian countries. State jewelry companies preserved traditional crafts, while at the same time developing a new and elegant style, designed to express the national identity of the still young state of Israel. There are important links between Palestinian, European, and American jewelry artists, who were guest lecturers at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in the 1970s and had a lasting influence on Israeli artists. The transition to art jewelry was finally completed in the 1980s, paving the way for artists who are now internationally renowned. A further chapter is dedicated to contemporary works by some outstanding young artists. Although their works are part of the global jewelry scene, they are also dedicated to their homeland, for example through unequivocal references to local political tensions. Artists (a selection): Bianca Eshel Gershuni, Esther Knobel, Deganit Stern Schocken, Vered Kaminski, Attai Chen.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 252-263) and index."The earliest painting by Rembrandt whose owner is documented depicts the prophet Balaam, on his way to blessing Israel. The man who bought it was a Sephardi Jew in the service of Cardinal Richelieu of France. The first known buyer of an etching plate by Rembrandt, depicting 'Abraham Dismissing Hagar and Ishmael', was a Sephardi Jew of Amsterdam. Seen through their eyes, Rembrandt was the creator of images with a special meaning to Jews. They have been followed through the centuries by Jewish collectors, Jewish art historians, Jewish artists who saw their own deepest concerns modelled in his art and life, and even prominent rabbis, one of whom said that Rembrandt was a Tzadik, a holy man blessed by God. This book is the first study in depth of the potent bond between Rembrandt and Jews, from his time to ours, a bond that has penetrated the image of the artist and the people alike."

- My family tree and me / by Petričić, Dušan,author,illustrator.(CARDINAL)750465;
"This one-of-a-kind picture book provides a beautifully simple introduction to the concept of family ancestry. It uses two stories in one to explore a small boy's family tree: the boy tells the family story of his father's side starting from the front of the book, and that of his mother's side starting from the back of the book. Four previous generations are introduced for each, from his great-great-grandparents to his parents. The grand finale in the center of the book reveals the boy's entire extended family, shown in one drawing with all the members from both sides identified by their relationship to him. Of particular interest is the cultural diversity of the boy's family, which includes European and Asian ancestors, and readers can visually interpret the family members' physical characteristics as they get passed on through the generations. Award-winning illustrator Dušan Petričić's classic artwork contains thoughtfully selected details with a touch of play and humor. And, since most of the story is told in the art, this is a wonderful tool for enhancing children's visual literacy as they spend time making connections and looking for clues. This book makes a great springboard for lessons on describing and sharing family histories and naming family relationships. Applicable in-class activities could include having children build their own family trees or imagine and draw portraits of their ancestors featuring period and cultural details. This title also lends itself to discussions on multiculturalism in families and in the larger community."-- Publisher.For ages 3-7.AD400L

A staunch defender of the highbrow pleasures of good music composed, played, and heard with intelligence, Vroon takes no prisoners in assessing the challenges, failures, and possible success that confront America's future as a nation of music listeners." -- Back Cover

- Spring in New York : Liu Xiaodong / by Liu, Xiaodong,1963-artist.(CARDINAL)856550; Betelli, Marco,translator.; Kiaoyi, Li,translator.; Munroe, Alexandra,contributor.(CARDINAL)223972; Ventura, Ruth,editor.; Ward, Ossian,editor.(CARDINAL)801739; Distributed Art Publishers,distributor.(CARDINAL)784868; Lisson Gallery (New York, N.Y.),publisher,host institution.(CARDINAL)853353;
Includes bibliographical references.Diary / Liu Xiaodong -- Liu Xiaodong's June 2020 - "I Do Not Come with Timeless Truths" / Alexandra Munroe -- Plates -- List of works -- Image credits -- Colophon.Liu Xiaodong, the usually itinerant Chinese painter, has been situated in New York City under lockdown since the middle of February, unable to travel back to his home in Beijing. From a small New York apartment, the artist has made a series of watercolour paintings documenting the changing landscape of the city over the past four months. A keen observer of modern life, Liu Xiaodong has been addressing radical shifts in society for over three decades, commenting on this emerging world through his work, in the manner of a contemporary history painter. The content of Liu Xiaodong's paintings is never transitory; his identified subject matter transpires as in-depth, complex artistic and social projects, be it documenting the life of transsexuals in Singapore (2001) or transgender and transnational artists in Berlin (2018), the forced relocation and supposed progress of Three Gorges Project in China (2003) or the complexities of multicultural life in his London series, Half Street (2013). This new body of work serves as a record of this landmark moment in history: first recording the picturesque, poignant scenes of Spring in New York under the pandemic--with empty children's playgrounds, deserted streets, blossoms falling from the trees, and portraits of his wife and daughter--to the subsequent crowds and zeal of the Black Lives Matter protests that have swept the city, and many others in recent weeks. Exhibition: Online exhibition, Lisson Gallery (July 2020).
