- The new India : the unmaking of the world's largest democracy / by Bhatia, Rahul(Journalist),author.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 415-424) and index."Since Narendra Modi's election in May 2014, India has become more dysfunctional and dangerous than ever. The "world's largest democracy" has seen a cascade of events ushered in by a nationalistic and religious government that have threatened the freedoms and identities of its citizens. If you support Modi, you are a bhakt, among the devoted. If you do not, you are an urban naxal, an unpatriotic traitor, and enemy of the Hindu faith. There is, increasingly, no room in between. In The New India, journalist Rahul Bhatia investigates this slow burn of democracy in India, connecting past and present to offer the first thorough account of how the country is sliding towards autocracy. He describes the religious, societal, and technological changes that have brought India to a point at which a nationalist mindset that despises democracy and human rights is spreading fast, all in an effort to bind the multiethnic, multilingual, and multicultural country into a single identity. Through a character-driven narrative informed by on the ground reporting, he investigates the disinformation machine at the heart of the Modi government, the corrupt lawmakers whose work targets religious minorities, the police force bent on raiding every public newsroom, and the CEO behind the largest data collecting agency in the world whose invention has forever altered Indian elections. At the same time, Bhatia shows us the consequences of these efforts on everyday citizens--from Muslims attempting to hold on to their property to students protesting the government's overreach of their education to journalists being threatened for uttering a single word against the BJP party. What emerges is a timely, urgent and at times shocking portrait of a country that has turned on itself"--

- The avian hourglass: a novel / by Drager, Lindsey,author.(CARDINAL)409789;
"The birds have disappeared. The stars are no longer visible. The Crisis is growing worse. In a town as isolated as a snowglobe, a woman who dreams of becoming a radio astronomer struggles to raise the triplets she gave birth to as a gestational surrogate, whose parents were killed in a car accident. Surrounded by characters who wear wings, memorize etymologies, and build gigantic bird nests, and bound to this town in which young adults must decide between two binary worldviews--either YES or NO--the woman is haunted by the old fable of the Girl in Glass Vessel, a cautionary tale about prying back the façade of one's world. When events begin to unfold that suggest a local legend about the town being the whole of the universe might be true, the woman finds her understanding of her own life-and her reality-slipping through her fingers. A reflection on mental health, the climate emergency, political polarization, and the growing reliance on technology, The Avian Hourglass asks readers to reframe how they conceive of a series of concentric understandings of home: the globe, one's country, one's town, one's family, and one's own body." --

The seventeen writers in this collection eschew the contemporary trend of 'reactive' writing in the genre of Appalachian studies to provide examples of how modern Appalachians are defining themselves on their own terms with resiliency, ingenuity, and spirit. Multidisciplinary and multigenre, they incorporate critical race theory and queer theory to challenge the labels, stereotypes, and marginalization that queer folks in Appalachia have faced historically from within and outside the region." -- Back cover.

- Enslaved Native Americans and the making of colonial South Carolina / by Johnson, D. Andrew,author.(CARDINAL)855947;
Includes bibliographical references and index.Introduction -- Before Carolina -- The founding of an agro-slaving regime -- The maize and pease complex, native slaving, and the rise of rice -- Native enslavement expands alongside the maize and pease complex -- Native plantations, 1715-1740 -- Nanny and the sherds of history -- Epilogue -- Appendix A. The database of Enslaved People in colonial South Carolina -- app. B. GIS methods -- app. C. Probate inventory of Charlesworth Glover."In 1708, the governor of South Carolina responded to a request from London to describe the population of the colony. This response included an often-overlooked segment of the population: Native Americans, who made up one-fourth of all enslaved people in the colony. Yet it was not long before these descriptions of enslaved Native people all but disappeared from the archive. In Enslaved Native Americans and the Making of Colonial South Carolina, D. Andrew Johnson argues that Native people were crucial to the development of South Carolina's economy and culture. By meticulously scouring documentary sources and creating a database of over 15,000 mentions of enslaved people, Johnson uses a uniquely interdisciplinary approach to reconsider the history of South Carolina and center the enslaved Native people who were forced to live and work on its plantations. Johnson also employs spatial analysis and examines archaeological evidence to study Native slavery in a plantation context. Although much of their impact is absent from the historical record, Native people's influence persisted: in the specific technologies they brought to the plantations where they were enslaved; in the development of Creole culture; and in the wealth and power of the founders and early leaders of the colony. By focusing on the Native minority of the enslaved population, Johnson recasts the colonial history of America, uncovering the importance of enslaved Native people to the colonial project and the complex historical connections between race and slavery." --
