- Among others : Blackness at MoMA / by English, Darby,1974-author.(CARDINAL)782690; Barat, Charlotte,author.(CARDINAL)835814; Museum of Modern Art (New York, N.Y.),issuing body.(CARDINAL)139062;
Includes bibliographical references."This expansive collection of essays on nearly 200 works in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art is the first substantial exploration of MoMA's uneven historical relationship with black artists, black audiences and the broader subject of racial blackness. By addressing these subjects through the consideration of works produced either by black artists or in response to race-related subjects, 'Among Others' confronts two kinds of truth: one plainly factual and informative, the other moral. It is equal parts historical investigation and truth-telling about the Museum's role in the history of the cultural politics of race. The richly illustrated volume begins with two historical essays. The first, by Darby English and Charlotte Barat, traces the history of MoMA's encounters with racial blackness since its founding--from an early commitment to African art and solo exhibitions devoted to the work of artists such as William Edmondson and Jacob Lawrence in the 1930s and 1940s, to its activities during the Civil Rights Movement, to the controversial Primitivism show of 1984 and beyond. The second essay, by Mabel O. Wilson, scrutinizes the Museum's record in collecting the work of black architects and designers. Following these essays are nearly 200 plates, each accompanied by an essay by one of the over 100 authors who hail from a range of fields." --

- Out of the sun : on race and storytelling / by Edugyan, Esi,author.(CARDINAL)466716;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 211-222) and index."Two-time Scotiabank Giller Prize winner and internationally bestselling author Esi Edugyan delivers an incisive analysis of the relationship between race and art. History is a construction. What happens when we begin to consider stories at the margins, when we grant them centrality? How does that complicate our certainties about who we are, as individuals, as nations, as human beings? Through the lens of visual art, literature, film, and the author's lived experience, Out of the Sun examines the depiction of Black histories in art, offering new perspectives to challenge the accepted narrative."--

Includes bibliographical references and indexes."Queer Exhibition Histories is composed of case studies, interviews and essays that emphasize different queer exhibitions and their modes of presentation and archiving. Many of these projects were short-lived or were executed between the walls of the private or domestic space, far beyond the scope of any institutional recognition. Therefore, the exhibitions materialized on limited budgets, were hardly documented and received barely any media coverage. For this reason, the legacy of these projects is highly dependent on personal archives, memories and paraphernalia, whereof the entries are not always easy to find. The events were not only artistic, but they could equally be discursive, activist and educational, or serve as a tool for community building. At the intersection of queerness and contemporary art, Queer Exhibition Histories investigates how the efforts of LGBTQIA+ artists and curators have advanced their public presence"--

- Black, brown + Latinx design educators : conversations on design and race / by Walters, Kelly,interviewer.; Walker, David Jon,writer of preface.;
"What are the experiences of Black, Brown, and Latinx graphic design educators in college classrooms today? How does racial identity influence their work and practice? What does it mean to be a person of color in the field of graphic design? In Black, Brown + Latinx Design Educators: Conversations on Design and Race, Kelly Walters unpacks these questions with design educators of color. The book collects twelve deeply personal interviews. The educators offer insights into their experiences teaching at public and private collegiate institutions across the United States and in Canada, as well their unique perspectives on themes such as growing up in predominantly White spaces, navigating the immigrant experience, defying parental expectations, and dealing with toxic work environments. Interwoven throughout the book are images that hold cultural significance, from family heirlooms and photos to design works that highlight aspects of the designers' identities. Walters centers the educators' stories--childhood influences, undergraduate and graduate experiences, career paths--and provides a critical resource for students and emerging educators and designers of color to see reflections of themselves in the classroom and studio" --Back cover
