Leaving boyhood behind: reclaiming the gift of manhood and traditional rites of passages / by Craig, Jason M.;
In this revised and expanded edition, author Jason Craig, cofounder of Fraternus, a Catholic mentoring program for boys, demonstrates how we can actually do something to address this crisis. Leaving Boyhood Behind resets our understanding of the gift of manhood and the wisdom of traditional rites of passage. Men have what it takes to change the tide of confusion, insecurity, and immaturity. Especially in the church, we have everything we need for true and authentic masculinity, because we have the true man and true God, Jesus Christ. This book is a call to action. You can understand these principles and enact the simple ideas in your own life in ways that are natural and effective.

Man enough : how Jesus redefines manhood / by Pyle, Nate.(CARDINAL)802725;
Includes bibliographical references.Out of the wilderness -- Man made -- Shifting sands -- Muscular Christianity -- Jesus -- Delighting in weakness -- The fall of a man -- Your name shall be -- Fully human -- Sharing space -- Beyond battles.Man Enough challenges the idea that there is one way to be a man. The masculinity that pervades our church and culture often demands that men conform to a macho ideal, leaving many men feeling ashamed that they re not living up to God s plan for them. Nate uses his own story of not feeling man enough, as well as sociological and historical reflections, to help men see that manhood isn t about what you do, but who you are. It s not about the size of your paycheck, your athletic ability, or your competitive spirit. You don t have to fit any masculine stereotype to be a real man. In our culture and churches more thoughtful, quieter, or compassionate personalities, as well as stay-at-home dads, are often looked down upon; and sermons, conferences, and publications center on helping men become real men . This pressure to have one s manhood validated is antithetical to Gospel living and negatively affects how men relate to each other, to women and children, and to God. Man Enough roots men in the Gospel, examines biblical examples of masculinity that challenge the idea of a singular type of man, and ultimately encourages men to conform to the image of Jesus freeing men up to be who they were created to be: a son of God who uniquely bears His image."

Gods of wood and stone / by Di Ionno, Mark,author.(CARDINAL)350631;
From Pulitzer Prize finalist Mark Di Ionno comes the next Great American Novel about the Great American Pastime-- The Natural with echoes of Ford, Updike, DeLillo and Roth--two men from disparate worlds and their search for what constitutes a meaningful life in a searing portrait of honor and masculinity, sport and celebrity, marriage and parenthood. Joe Grudeck is a living legend--a first-ballot Hall of Famer beloved by Boston Red Sox fans who once played for millions under the bright Fenway lights. Now, he finds himself haunted by his own history, searching for connection in a world that's alienated the true person behind his celebrity facade. He'll step back into the spotlight once more with a very risky Cooperstown acceptance speech that has the power to change everything--except the darkness in his past. Horace Mueller is a different type altogether--working in darkness at a museum blacksmith shop and living in a rundown farmhouse on the outskirts of Cooperstown, New York. He clings to an anachronistic lifestyle, fueled by nostalgia for simpler times and a rebellion against the sport-celebrity lifestyle of Cooperstown, struggling to bring his baseball prodigy son to his side. Gods of Wood and Stone is the story of these two men--framed by the lens of baseball, a timeless, but strikingly singular tale of the responsibilities of manhood and the pitfalls of glory in a painful and exhilarating novel that's distinctly American.

After whiteness : an education in belonging / by Jennings, Willie James,1961-author.(CARDINAL)845975;
Includes bibliographical references.Prologue: secrets -- Fragments -- Designs -- Buildings -- Motions -- Eros -- For further thought: beyond the end.Theological education has always been about formation: first of people, then of communities, then of the world. If we continue to promote whiteness and its related ideas of masculinity and individualism in our educational work, it will remain diseased and thwart our efforts to heal the church and the world. But if theological education aims to form people who can gather others together through border-crossing pluralism and God-drenched communion, we can begin to cultivate the radical belonging that is at the heart of God's transformative work. In this inaugural volume of the Theological Education between the Times series, Willie James Jennings shares the insights gained from his extensive experience in theological education, most notably as the dean of a major university's divinity school--where he remains one of the only African Americans to have ever served in that role. He reflects on the distortions hidden in plain sight within the world of education but holds onto abundant hope for what theological education can be and how it can position itself at the front of a massive cultural shift away from white, Western cultural hegemony. This must happen through the formation of what Jennings calls erotic souls within ourselves--erotic in the sense that denotes the power and energy of authentic connection with God and our fellow human beings. After Whiteness is for anyone who has ever questioned why theological education still matters. It is a call for Christian intellectuals to exchange isolation for intimacy and embrace their place in the crowd--just like the crowd that followed Jesus and experienced his miracles. It is part memoir, part decolonial analysis, and part poetry--a multimodal discourse that deliberately transgresses boundaries, as Jennings hopes theological education will do, too.
