Color photographs and drawings illustrate the distresses found in three basic pavement types: asphalt concrete-surfaced, jointed (plain and reinforced) portland cement concrete, and continuously reinforced concrete. Drawings of the distress types provide a reference to assess their severity. Methods for measuring the size of distresses and for assigning severity levels are given. The manual also describes how to conduct the distress survey and measure cracks in the pavement. Sample forms for recording and reporting the data are included. The manual also tells how to calibrate and operate fault measurement devices"--Page i.Performed and sponsored by Office of Infrastructure Research and Development, Federal Highway Administration.

Early analyses of long-term pavement performance general pavement studies data : lessons learned and recommendations for future analyses / by Rauhut, J. Brent(James Brent),1928-(CARDINAL)311464; Strategic Highway Research Program (U.S.)(CARDINAL)298325;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 73-74).Executive summary -- Introduction -- Data analysis procedures used for early analyses (1992 and 1993) -- Data base expectations for future analyses -- Alternative analytical procedures for developing equations to predict pavement distresses -- Evaluation of design procedures -- Summary -- References -- Appendices.The purpose of this report is to share the experience gained and lessons learned by research staff during early data analyses of the General Pavement Studies (GPS) and to recommend procedures for future analysts. A review of the techniques used is provided. Shortcomings of the Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) Data Base, known at the time of early analyses, are discussed and data base expectations for future analyses were identified. Some interesting and useful distress and roughness prediction models were developed that illustrate the effects of several design variables. Other analytical procedures for developing predictive equations were identified and described, which may be of use in future analyses. Ten techniques used by the research staff for evaluating the American Association of Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) design equations are identified and recommendations for future evaluations provided.... contract no.

SHRP-LTPP materials characterization : five-year report / by Hadley, William O.; Groeger, Jonathan L.; Strategic Highway Research Program (U.S.)(CARDINAL)298325;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 170-174).Introduction -- Field material sampling and testing -- Laboratory materials handling and testing -- Appendices -- References.The Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) developed two materials characterization programs: one for field sampling, and another for laboratory testing. The SHRP field materials sampling and laboratory materials testing program encompassed all 50 states; 10 Canadian provinces; and Puerto Rico. This report documents the development and execution of these programs for both the General Pavement Studies (GPS) and the Specific Pavement Studies (SPS). These topics are described separately here, although they are linked inherently. Suggestions are given for future materials characterization within the Long-Term Pavement Performance program as it continues under the Federal Highway Administration.

The purpose of this report is to document the development, evolution, and current status of GPS. Data collection criteria were developed for each of the various data elements in GPS, including traffic, skid resistance, deflection, profile, distress, environment, material properties, and climate. Some data were collected by states, others by the SHRP regional offices.
