Includes bibliographical references and index.Scholars of the African Americas are sometimes segregated from one another by region or period, by language, or by discipline. Bringing together essays on fashion, the visual arts, film, literature, and history, this volume shows how our understanding of the African diaspora in the Americas can be enriched by crossing disciplinary boundaries to recontextualize images, words, and thoughts as part of a much greater whole. Diaspora describes dispersion, but also the seeding, sowing, or scattering of spores that take root and grow, maturing and adapting within new environments. The examples of diasporic cultural production explored in this volume reflect on loss and dispersal, but they also constitute expansive and dynamic intellectual and artistic production, neither wholly African nor wholly American (in the hemispheric sense), whose resonance deeply inflects all of the Americas. African Diaspora in the Cultures of Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States represents a call for multidisciplinary, collaborative, and complex approaches to the subject of the African diaspora. -- Publisher description.

These and other crimes committed in the name of love, jealousy, blackmail, and revenge are ones that only the indomitable Jane Marple can solve. A triumphant celebration of Christie's legacy and essential reading for crime lovers, Marple is a timely reminder of why Jane Marple remains one of the most famous detectives of all time."--

Martha Clippinger : sour-sweet / by Clippinger, Martha,1983-artist.(CARDINAL)885559; Westfall, Stephen,writer of supplementary textual content.(CARDINAL)223845; Elizabeth Harris Gallery,issuing body,host institution.(CARDINAL)265254;
"In sour-sweet, the artist presents her painted wood constructions and handwoven wool tapetes together, revealing varied surface textures and shifts in scale across her practice. Clippinger's rhythmic arrangements of colors result from an improvisational and adaptive process. With her painted wood constructions, each object embodies a chance encounter with singular materials. Clippinger embraces the inherent imperfections of the found materials and integrates them into the off-kilter structures of her designs. These irregular geometries inspire two-dimensional designs that are translated into wool by weavers Licha González Ruiz and Agustín Contreras López of Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, Mexico." -- Summary taken from exhibition webpage:"Born and raised in Columbus, Georgia, Martha Clippinger received a BA from Fordham University and an MFA from Mason Gross School of Art, Rutgers University. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including a 2017 Ella Fountain Pratt Emerging Artists Grant from the Durham Arts Council, a 2014 American Academy of Arts and Letters Purchase Award, and a 2013 Fulbright-Garcia Robles research grant completed in Oaxaca, Mexico. She has been a fellow at Kohler Arts & Industry, the Sam and Adele Golden Art Foundation, Artspace, MacDowell Colony, Edward F. Albee Foundation, and the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation. Her work has been featured in The Brooklyn Rail, Hyperallergic, and The Huffington Post, and is in public collections such as The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art and The Columbus Museum. Clippinger is represented by Elizabeth Harris Gallery in New York and Hodges Taylor in Charlotte, NC. She lives and works in Durham, North Carolina." -- Biography from:

Uncommon measure : a journey through music, performance, and the science of time / by Hodges, Natalie,author.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 195-220).Prelude -- Untrainment -- A Sixth Sense : Notes on Improvisation -- Symmetry Breaking -- Chaconne -- The Still Point of the Turning World -- Coda. Memory is a Hologram."How does time shape consciousness, and consciousness, time? Do we live in time, or does time live in us? And how does music, with its patterns of rhythm and harmony, inform our experience of time? Uncommon Measure: Reflections on Music, Performance, and the Science of Time explores these questions from the perspective of a young Korean American who dedicated herself to perfecting her art until, crippled by performance anxiety, she was forced to give up her dreams of becoming a career solo violinist. Anchoring her narrative in illuminating research in neuroscience and theories of quantum physics, Hodges traces her own passage through model-minority expectations and examines her immigrant mother's encounters with racism to come to terms with the meaning of a life in music. The lessons she learns enable her to move from anxiety toward acceptance, from rote re-creation toward the freedom of improvisation"--
