- Modern art at the Berlin Wall : demarcating culture in the Cold War Germanys / by Mesch, Claudia,author.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 267-308) and index.At the height of the Cold War, art produced in divided Germany contested the cultural demarcation of East and West. Here Claudia Mesch shows how a wide group of artists struggled to take visual art beyond the crude separations of the 'Iron Curtain', and to transcend the first global cultural divide of the twentieth century. Artists in Berlin produced artworks--including painting, performance and film--that engaged critically with imposed national and global identities, and with issues of memory and trauma. 'Around the Berlin Wall' presents a new picture of the Cold War border between East and West as a dynamic and international cultural space, and is essential for all those interested in art history, modernism, the Cold War and the cultural history of the twentieth century.

- Girl in a band / by Gordon, Kim,1953-author.(CARDINAL)330544;
Kim Gordon, founding member of Sonic Youth, fashion icon, and role model for a generation of women, now tells her story -- a memoir of life as an artist, of music, marriage, motherhood, independence, and as one of the first women of rock and roll. Gordon tells the story of her family, growing up in California in the '60s and '70s, her life in visual art, her move to New York City, the men in her life, her marriage, her relationship with her daughter, her music, and her band. She takes us back to the lost New York of the 1980s and '90s that gave rise to Sonic Youth, and the Alternative revolution in popular music. The band helped build a vocabulary of music -- paving the way for Nirvana, Hole, Smashing Pumpkins and many other acts. But at its core, Girl in a Band examines the route from girl to woman in uncharted territory, music, art career, what partnership means -- and what happens when that identity dissolves.

Three sections fill this book with examples, strategies, and possibilities for educators interested in enriching teaching and learning in conversation with the art and issues of our times. In this innovative anthology, co-editors Dana Carlisle Kletchka and B. Stephen Carpenter, II have compiled translations and examinations of theory and practice at the intersection of collaborative professional development, art museums, and contemporary art. To this end, a diverse group of art educators and art museum educators add to a growing body of knowledge about the purposeful reflections and dialogues, inspiring curricula, and innovative pedagogies that inform professional development experiences in art museum contexts.--publisher's website.

It begins with case studies of artist groups, including Spiral, OBAC and AfriCOBRA, who began questioning Western aesthetic traditions and created work that honored leaders, affirmed African American culture, and embraced an African lineage. Also showcased is an Oakland Museum exhibition of 1968 called "New Perspectives in Black Art," as a way to consider if Black Panther Party activities in the neighborhood might have impacted local artists' work. The concluding chapters concentrate on the relationship between selected Black Panther Party members and visual culture, focusing on how they were covered by the mainstream press, and how they self-represented to promote Party doctrine and agendas.---Publisher description

- Blind visitor experiences at art museums / by Hayhoe, Simon,author.(CARDINAL)836949;
Includes bibliographical references and index.Theories on blindness, disability and art. Why do we think that people who are blind cannot understand the visual arts? -- The earliest art education of people who are blind -- Case study -- Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The Metropolitan Museum of Art : a New York icon -- Experiences of verbal imaging -- Experiences of teaching and independent visits -- The two questions.Blind Visitor Experiences at Art Museums seeks to answer two questions: 1. Given the guiding principle of visual art being understood only by sight, what do people understand when sight is diminished or not present? 2. Moreover, given the experience of blindness, what are the effects of vision loss or no vision on a cultural identity in art? It does this by exploring seven in-depth case studies of visitors to the education department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the experiences of leading groups by two teachers. In addition, this book includes findings from participant observations in classes and touch tours for blind and visually impaired people at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. After reading this book, readers will understand both passive and active social exclusion from the museum's facilities (active exclusion is defined as a deliberate act of exclusion based on the belief that blind people are incapable of understanding visual art, whereas passive exclusion is defined as exclusion resulting from an aspect of miseducation, such as inappropriate building design or learning materials, or a lack of training, knowledge, resources, access materials or buildings).
