Rediscovering travel : a guide for the globally curious / by Kugel, Seth,author.(CARDINAL)783577;
Includes bibliographical references.Rediscovering discovery -- Organic experiences -- Why we travel -- Technology and travel -- Risk and travel -- People and travel -- Money and travel -- Bad influences, good travelers.By captivating millions during his six-year, fifty-country tenure as the New York Times's ٢Frugal Traveler,٣ Seth Kugel has become one of our most internationally beloved travel writers. While his famously unassuming journeys around the globe have forged a signature philosophy of whimsy and practicality, they have also revealed the seemingly infinite booby traps of on-the-grid tourism. In a book with widespread cultural reverberations, Kugel takes the modern travel industry to task, determined to reignite humanity's age-old sense of adventure that has virtually been vanquished by the spontaneity-obliterating likes of Google Maps, TripAdvisor, and Starwood points. Woven throughout with vivid tales of his perfectly imperfect adventures, Rediscovering Travel explains-often hilariously-how to make the most of new digital technologies without being shackled to them. For the tight-belted tourist and the first-class flyer, the eager student and the comfort-seeking retiree, Kugel shows how we too can rediscover the joy of discovery.

Getting us to Grandma's / by Hohn, Nadia L.,author.(CARDINAL)625169; Grooms, TeMika,illustrator.(CARDINAL)815615;
"No one knows maps like Nikki -- but can she get her family to Grandma's house in time? Nikki's family is preparing for a long road trip from Toronto to the Bronx to attend Uncle Travis's wedding. They pack their suitcases, boxes of Jamaican black cake, and most importantly to Nikki, the big map book! Nikki loves geography and enjoys tracing the routes to all the places her relatives live -- her Grandpa in Florida, her cousins in Atlanta, DC, and Boston. She daydreams of England, where other family lives, and Jamaica and Africa, where her roots run deep. Her attention comes back to the road trip when it's clear that Daddy's taken a wrong turn. "I can help!" says Nikki, who proves to be an excellent navigator. She guides them back to the Bronx Expressway, under the elevated subway tracks, onto a street of brown row houses and safely to Grandma's. Inspired by the childhoods of author Nadia L. Hohn and illustrator TeMika Grooms, Getting to Grandma's House is full of fun historic details -- a world before Google Maps! -- and authentic cultural moments shared by diasporic families, whose stories can be traced across continents. A fantastic representation of Black girls in STEM."--

Vargic's miscellany of curious maps : mapping the modern world / by Vargic, Martin,1998-;
New York Times bestseller A stunning full-color collection of inventive, poignant, humorous, and controversial maps of the world from the internationally recognized digital artist behind the stunning Map of Stereotypes. Slovakian artist Martin Vargic rose to international fame in 2014 when his Map of the Internet 1.0 went viral. Using old National Geographic maps as inspiration, he drew a striking and meticulous map of the most visited websites in the world, portraying Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple as sovereign countries; the eastern continent as the old world with originators like Microsoft and IBM; and at the most southern tip, a forgotten wasteland of outdated and obsolete places of the past like Youve Got Mail and Friendster. The extraordinary Map of Stereotypes is a cartogram based on a westerners stereotypical view of the world that assigns more than two thousand labels and pop culture references to cities, states, countries, continents, oceans, and seas on a large-scale world map. Visually stunning and remarkably clever, both artworks generated notice worldwide. Beautiful, unique, and packed with intricate and brilliant details, Vargics Miscellany of Curious Maps showcases this visual artists rare talent as never before in a gorgeous edition sure to be treasured by fans. Along with eight exquisite and unexpected conceptual atlases, he has imagined The Music Map, The Map of YouTube, The Corporate World Map, and many more. An additional fifty mini-maps of the world display a diverse list of data, such as the number of heavy metal bands per capita, the probability of getting struck by lightning, average penis length, NSA surveillance rate, and number of tractors per 1,000 inhabitants. Extensively mapping various subjects from all corners of our modern civilization, Vargics Miscellany of Curious Maps is a fresh and thoughtful look at Western culture that will spark conversation and continually surprise and fascinate readers.

Maphead : charting the wide, weird world of geography wonks / by Jennings, Ken,1974-(CARDINAL)355710;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 251-266) and index.It comes as no surprise that, as a kid, Jeopardy! legend Ken Jennings slept with a bulky Hammond world atlas by his pillow every night. Maphead recounts his lifelong love affair with geography and explores why maps have always been so fascinating to him and to fellow enthusiasts everywhere. Jennings takes readers on a world tour of geogeeks, from the London Map Fair to the computer programmers at Google Earth. Each chapter delves into a different aspect of map culture: highpointing, geocaching, road atlas rallying, even the "unreal estate" charted on the maps of fiction and fantasy. He also considers the ways in which cartography has shaped our history, suggesting that the impulse to make and read maps is as relevant today as it has ever been.--From publisher description.

A Gettysburg photo tour : then & now photos with map locations and GPS coordinates / by Kunkel, Jack,author.;
Includes bibliographical references and index.ome back in time with me as we tour the exact locations on the Gettysburg battlefield where events happened - both momentous and mundane - during the battle that changed American history. We know for sure exactly where certain events happened because we can match the modern-day locations to where the old, period photographs were taken. The Gettysburg battlefield was unique in the Civil War in that it was both heavily photographed and well preserved, allowing us to follow in the exact footsteps of the original photographers who took photos that they considered the most worthy at that time. Though no photos were taken while the battle was in progress, a large number were taken just a few days later - while Lee's army was still retreating back to Virginia, and before mothers learned their boys lay dead at a place called Gettysburg. All of the best of the period photos known taken of Gettysburg in the days or month after the battle are included in this book, most with easily followed map locations of where they were taken, and even GPS coordinates. Where no immediate photos were taken of an interesting subject, I've included the earliest photo available, sometimes one or two decades after the battle. Most of the maps in the book are tied to Google online maps, and/or to maps on the website CivilWarBattles.us, so you can simply click or type the book's map links on your computer or smart phone to find the exact photo locations. In all, you'll find over 100 then & now Gettysburg photos in this book, as well as numerous landscape photos showing modern views of the battlefield. Whether you tour the battlefield from your easy chair, or actually walking the field, I hope and believe you'll find this book to be an invaluable companion. --
