The big three : Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and the rebirth of the Boston Celtics / by Holley, Michael,1970-author.(CARDINAL)468846;
Includes bibliographical resources and index.It's a new game -- Pivot -- Smart and hungry -- Attacked -- Three long nights -- Seeing red -- Boston connections -- Ubuntu -- Graduation -- Anything is possible -- Grounded -- The hard way to LA -- Decisions -- Broken brotherhood -- The final push -- Renewal."The first of "The Big Three" was Paul Pierce. As Boston Celtics fans watched the team retire Pierce's jersey in a ceremony on February 11, 2018, they remembered again the incredible performances Pierce put on in the city for fifteen years, helping the Celtics escape the bottom of their conference to become champions and perennial championship contenders. But Pierce's time in the city wasn't always so smooth. In 2000, he was stabbed in a downtown nightclub eleven times in a seemingly random attack. Six years later, remaining the sole star on a struggling team, he asked to be traded and briefly became a lightning rod among fans. Then, in 2007, the Boston Celtics General Manager made two monumental trades, bringing Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett to Boston. A press conference on July 31, 2007 was a sight to behold: Pierce, KG, and Ray Allen holding up Celtics jerseys for the flood of media. Coach Doc Rivers made sure the team bonded over the thought of winning a title and living by a Bantu term called Ubuntu, which translates as "I am because we are." Rivers wanted to make it clear that togetherness and brotherhood would help them maximize their talent and win. What came next -- the synthesis of the Celtics' "Big Three" and their dominant championship run -- cemented their standing as one of great teams in NBA history, a rival to Kobe Bryant's Lakers and LeBron James's Cavaliers. This is the team that brought excitement back to the Garden, and therefore to one of the most storied franchises in all of sports. They met their historic rivals, the Lakers, in the 2008 NBA Finals, winning the series in Game 6, in a rout on their home court with a raucous, concert like atmosphere. Along the victory parade route, Paul Pierce smoked a cigar -- as a tribute to legendary former Celtics Coach Red Auerbach. In a city now defined by a wealth of championships, "The Big Three" joined the club. Michael Holley, the premier chronicler of Boston sports, brings their story to life with countless untold stories and behind-the-scenes details in another bestselling tome for New England and sports fans across the country."--Amazon.

The rush : a novel / by Prak, Michelle,author.;
"In this riveting psychological thriller--perfect for fans of Jane Harper's The Survivors and Erica Ferencik's Into the Jungle--a ferocious storm in the Australian Outback sets the stage for betrayal and murder.With a massive downpour and flash floods predicted, Quinn Durand leaves work and races for the safety of home. The first drops start to fall as she spots something strange on the familiar bush route. With no reception and nothing but an empty road for miles in either direction, she investigates and discovers it's a body, dumped by the side of the road. When she approaches to check for signs of life, an arm reaches out and grabs her. Back at the country pub where Quinn lives, her boss Andrea has prepared for the torrential downpour. She's bunkered down with her toddler son sleeping in the back room when she's startled by a banging at the door. It's a biker, seeking shelter from the punishing storm. Meanwhile, out on the roads, two young couples on their way across the country struggle against the lashing rains. Tensions rise as they realize that they don't really know each other, nor are they remotely prepared for the storm. Alone, angry, and afraid in unfamiliar surroundings, flooding isn't the only threat bearing down on them. Chilling, tense, and twisted, this multi-POV popcorn thriller is "compelling and explosive; you won't be able to put this book down" (Hayley Scrivenor, author of Dirt Town)."--

The epic of Gilgamesh / by Dixon, Kevin H.,artist.(CARDINAL)679445; Dixon, Kent H.,1941-translator.(CARDINAL)679448; Kick, Russell,writer of introduction.(CARDINAL)389634;
"The Epic of Gilgamesh is the Ur-epic--the hero's journey, quest, and education--inscribed onto damp clay tablets several millennia before Odysseus or the priest of Ecclesiastes found their voices. Sumerian versions of the epic date back almost 5000 years. It is a Bildungsroman of a bad king learning to become a proper human being and therefore a wise king, and to do so, besides defeating lions and monsters and surviving great physical and emotional suffering, he must face, and answer, the first (and last) great question: mortality. Translated into English and presented here in its entirety as a graphic novel, this version of The Epic of Gilgamesh is a father/son project by scholar and translator Kent H. Dixon and his son, the comix artist Kevin Dixon, who bring a fresh take on this great work. The reader is slowed down by the artwork and visual jokes and the artist's wry hat-tippings to various masters (Crumb and Gilbert Shelton alongside Schultz and Capp, Popeye and Krazy Kat, Uderzo's Astérix and Hergé's Tintin), and then, once the reading pace has shifted into lower gear, having all these aspects complementarily drawn out, makes for an especially satisfying counterpoint to the low-key, the wise and cynical and morally sophisticated, and sometimes sublimely Olympian humor."--Page 4 of cover.In which we meet the randy young king and demi-god Gilgamesh and his equally untamed future friend, Enkidu--a wild man of the steppe -- In which Gilgamesh and Enkidu fall into a terrible fight over Gilgamesh's abuse of power -- Now fast friends, the two heroes decide to seek out the monster of the cedar forest, Humbaba, and slay him--just for the fame of it -- In which the heroes journey to Humbaba's lair, through good omens and bad -- The heroes, with help from the sun god Shamash, defeat the monster Humbaba, and speed their raft home with his gory head mounted high -- The goddess Ishtar propositions Gilgamesh, who rejects and insults her, as does Enkidu; in revenge, she leads down the bull of heaven to crush them. They defeat it, but Enkidu has a dream -- For their arrogance "one of the heroes must die". Enkidu falls sick, curses everyone, is reprimanded by Shamash, and, after 12 days, he dies -- In which Gilgamesh laments, at great length, the loss of Enkidu -- "If Enkidu can die, so can I", reasons Gilgamesh and sets out across the desert to seek remedy of the only mortal to have beaten death, encountering lions and scorpion men en route. He even traverses Shamash's tunnel -- Gilgamesh comes upon Siduri, who tries to convince him the secret of life is not immortality. But Gilgamesh forges on and with Siduri's directions, and some wrong moves, he finally finds Utnapishtim, the Babylonion Noah. -- Utnapishtim relays the story of the flood and his unique survival. But this is not for Gilgamesh, who can't stay awake for even a week. Utnapishtim does direct him to a plant of enduring youth, but a snake steals it. Gilgamesh is left boasting of his great deeds and the wall he built around Erik. -- Dream-like, Enkidu reappears, to help Gilgamesh retrieve his stick and his puck from the Netherworld. But he becomes trapped; finally Gilgamesh persuades a god to let him out and Enkidu's ghost returns to teach his friend the secrets of the Netherworld.
