How likely is it that a poll is correct? Is it smart to buy last year's highest-performing stock? These questions all involve the interpretation of statistics, and this film is an introduction to this vitally important subject in today's data-driven society. Explanations for terms such as mean, median, percentile, quartile, statistically significant, and bell curve, and scores of other statistical concepts are covered. The emphasis is on the role of statistics in daily life, giving a broad overview of how statistical tools are employed in risk assessment, college admissions, drug testing, fraud investigation, and a host of other applications.DVD.

Development of transient permeability theory and apparatus for measurements of cementitious materials / by Roy, D. M.(CARDINAL)324792; Pennsylvania State University.Materials Research Laboratory.(CARDINAL)324791; Strategic Highway Research Program (U.S.)(CARDINAL)298325;
Includes bibliographical references (page 25).Executive summary -- Introduction -- Introduction to theory of pressure pulse testing -- Model development -- Model solution -- Discussion of results of mathematical model -- Equipment design -- Sampling handling -- Typical experimental results -- Limitation of the equipment -- References -- Appendices.A permeability apparatus has been developed that allows a rapid and accurate measurement of water transport concrete. The principle of the apparatus consists in subjecting a test specimen to a small pressure differential and monitor both the pressure decay and the pressure rise resulting in response to the pressure pulse. Very rapid measurements are possible with this apparatus for specimens possessing permeabilities on the order of microdarcy to nanodarcy. However, below a nanodarcy, the problems of establishing pressure equilibrium throughout the test specimen becomes more difficult. To explain the behavior of cementitious materials subjected to pressure, mathematical relationships were developed building upon the work in the existing literature on fluid flow in porous media subjected to a transient pressure pulse.... contract no.
