Includes bibliographical references."News of the fall of Constantinople on May 29, 1453, spread throughout Europe like wildfire. The geographic approach of the Ottoman Empire coincided with the emergence of a fascination with this highly developed culture and its groundbreaking scientific insights. Artists from every corner of Europe traveled to the shores of the Bosporus; trade flourished, as did cultural interchange, giving rise to a great number of works of art that reflect intercultural dynamism. This opulent volume presents examples of the early enthusiasm for the Near East and illustrates the allure that it exercised on Western artists, drawing attention to the influence of the Islamic world on Renaissance thought. Masterpieces by Giovanni Bellini, Vittore Carpaccio, Albrecht Dürer, Titian and other artists are included in this lavish publication."-- Provided by distributor.

- Algérie, des peintres de la conquête : Eugène Fromentin et Horace Vernet / by Mauviel, Maurice,author.(CARDINAL)872191; Fromentin, Eugène,1820-1876,artist.(CARDINAL)291686; Vernet, Horace,1789-1863,artist.(CARDINAL)165296; Editions Wallâda,publisher.;

Includes bibliographical references (pages 331-344) and index."Beginning in the 16th century, the golden age of European navigation created a vigorous textile trade, and a breathtaking variety of textile designs subsequently spread across the globe. Trade textiles blended the traditional designs, skills, and tastes of their cultures of origin, with new techniques learned through global exchange, creating beautiful new works that are also historically fascinating. Interwoven Globe is the first book to analyze these textiles within the larger history of trade and design. Richly illustrated texts explore the interrelationship of textiles, commerce, and taste from the age of discovery to the 19th century, including a detailed discussion of 120 illuminating works. From the elaborate dyed and painted cotton goods of India to the sumptuous silks of Japan, China, Turkey, and Iran, the paths of influence are traced westward to Europe and the Americas. Essential to this exchange was the trade in highly valued natural dyes and dye products, underscoring the influence of global exploration on the aesthetics and production techniques of textiles, and the resulting fashion for the 'exotic.'"--

Includes bibliographical references."Accompanying a major traveling exhibition, this book examines the unique artistic and cultural exchange between the Republic of Venice and Turkish Ottoman culture and identity over a three-hundred-year period. From the early Renaissance to the end of the eighteenth century, Venice held a central position in the global trade network. This book explores how artistic and cultural ideas originating in the Ottoman Empire arrived in Venice and were reinterpreted through the decorative arts, printed books, painting, drawing, and architecture. Featuring a richly diverse selection from the collections of the Musei Civici di Venezia, this volume showcases the creative contributions of well-known Venetian artists such as Vittore Carpaccio, Gentile Bellini, Michele Giambono, and Mariano Fortuny alongside works created by the best anonymous craftspeople both in Venice and the Ottoman Empire, including textiles, metalwork, armor, and ceramics. With newly researched essays by esteemed international scholars on topics such as trade routes, the involvement of international communities in Venice, diplomatic interactions, and military power dynamics, this important volume offers freshly reviewed and new perspectives on the intricate artistic relationship that existed between Venice and the Ottoman Empire." -- Publisher's website.

- Inventing exoticism : geography, globalism, and Europe's early modern world / by Schmidt, Benjamin,author.(CARDINAL)285283; University of Pennsylvania.Press,publisher.(CARDINAL)854177;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 375-394) and index.As early modern Europe launched its multiple projects of global empire, it simultaneously embarked on an ambitious program of describing and picturing the world. The shapes and meanings of the extraordinary global images that emerged from this process form the subject of this highly original and richly textured study of cultural geography. Inventing Exoticism draws on a vast range of sources from history, literature, science, and art to describe the energetic and sustained international engagements that gave birth to our modern conceptions of exoticism and globalism. Illustrated with more than two hundred images of engravings, paintings, ceramics, and more, Inventing Exoticism shows, in vivid example and persuasive detail, how Europeans came to see and understand the world at an especially critical juncture of imperial imagination. At the turn to the eighteenth century, European markets were flooded by books and artifacts that described or otherwise evoked non-European realms: histories and ethnographies of overseas kingdoms, travel narratives and decorative maps, lavishly produced tomes illustrating foreign flora and fauna, and numerous decorative objects in the styles of distant cultures. Inventing Exoticism meticulously analyzes these, while further identifying the particular role of the Dutch--"Carryers of the World," as Defoe famously called them--in the business of exotica. The form of early modern exoticism that sold so well, as this book shows, originated not with expansion-minded imperialists of London and Paris, but in the canny ateliers of Holland. By scrutinizing these materials from the perspectives of both producers and consumers--and paying close attention to processes of cultural mediation--Inventing Exoticism interrogates traditional postcolonial theories of knowledge and power. It proposes a wholly revisionist understanding of geography in a pivotal age of expansion and offers a crucial historical perspective on our own global culture as it engages in a media-saturated world.
