- What makes an effective executive / by Drucker, Peter F.(Peter Ferdinand),1909-2005,author.(CARDINAL)148922;
An effective executive does not need to be a leader in the typical sense of the word. Peter Drucker, the author of more than two dozen Harvard Business Review articles, wrote that some of the best business and nonprofit CEOs he worked with over his 65-year consulting career were not stereotypical leaders. They ranged from extroverted to nearly reclusive, from easygoing to controlling, from generous to parsimonious. What made them all effective is that they followed the same eight practices: They asked, "What needs to be done?" and "What is right for the enterprise?" They developed action plans. They took responsibility for decisions and for communicating. They were focused on opportunities rather than problems. They ran productive meetings. And they thought and said "we" rather than "I." The first two practices provided them with the knowledge they needed. The next four helped them convert this knowledge into effective action, for knowledge is useless to executives until it has been translated into deeds. The last two ensured that the whole organization felt responsible and accountable. Effective executives know that they have authority only because they have the trust of the organization. This means they must think of the needs and opportunities of the organization before they think of their own. Drucker also suggests a ninth practice that's so important, he elevates it to the level of a rule: Listen first, speak last. Effectiveness is a discipline. And, like every discipline, it can be learned and must be earned.--

- Leadership BS : fixing workplaces and careers one truth at a time / by Pfeffer, Jeffrey,author.(CARDINAL)139120;
"'The leadership industry has failed,' charges Stanford Business School professor Pfeffer in this lively critique of a professional discipline driven, according to him, not by wisdom or a desire to foster leadership, but by money. Its precepts, he writes, are 'based more on hope than reality, on wishes rather than data, on beliefs instead of science.' Pfeffer sets out to help his readers rethink leadership by focusing on the root causes of failures in business leadership. Pfeffer counsels readers to look away from the 'inspiration and fables' that glut the market, and to accept that some of those truisms are fallible: authenticity can be overrated, and honesty is not always the best policy for leaders. Pfeffer has taken on an ambitious project, given the uniformity of current thinking on business success, but his bluntness should go a long way toward slaughtering the sacred cows of the leadership industry." --Publishers Weekly.Includes bibliographic references (pages 225-246) and index.Introduction: things are bad--here's why -- Why inspiration and fables cause problems and fix nothing -- Modesty: why leaders aren't -- Authenticity: misunderstood and overrated -- Should leaders tell the truth--and do they? -- Trust: where did it go, and why? -- Why leaders "eat" first -- Take care of yourself -- Fixing leadership failure: you can handle the truth.

- Better under pressure : how great leaders bring out the best in themselves and others / by Menkes, Justin.(CARDINAL)473301;
Includes bibliographical references and index.Most business leaders can take only so much pressure before their performance slides. Yet some CEOs deliver their greatest successes when times get toughest. In "Better Under Pressure", Justin Menkes reveals their secrets. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 60 CEOs from an array of industries, Menkes shows that great leaders strive relentlessly to maximize their own as well as their people's potential and possess three cornerstone attributes: (1) Realistic optimism: They recognize the risks threatening their organization's survival, yet remain confident that the company will prevail, (2) Subservience to purpose: They dedicate themselves to pursuing a noble cause, and win their team's commitment to that cause, and (3) Finding order in chaos: They find clarity amid the many variables affecting their business and cull data to form the conclusions that matter most to the company. Menkes demonstrates how each attribute manifests in real life and enables top performance under extreme duress. And he shows how to deploy those attributes to become a leader who only shines under pressure.
