- Building the bonds of attachment : awakening love in deeply traumatized children / by Hughes, Daniel A.;
Includes bibliographical references.Building the Bonds of Attachment is the third edition of a critically acclaimed book for social workers, therapists, and parents who strive to assist children with reactive attachment disorder. This work is a composite case study of the developmental course of one child following years of abuse and neglect. Building the Bonds of Attachment focuses on both the specialized psychotherapy and parenting that is often necessary in facilitating a child's psychological development and attachment security. It develops a model for intervention by blending attachment theory and research, trauma theory, and the general principles of parenting, together with child and family therapy. This book is a practical guide for the adult—whether professional or parent—who endeavors to help such children. The third edition of this widely popular book will present the many recent changes in the intervention model. These include changes in both the psychotherapist's and parent's interventions. The attachment history of the adults is made more relevant. There is greater congruence between attachment theory and research and the interventions being demonstrated as well as greater reference to this theory and research.

- Suspect relations : sex, race, and resistance in colonial North Carolina / by Fischer, Kirsten,1963-(CARDINAL)268239;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 195-251) and index.Introduction: Changing Conceptions of Race -- Disorderly Women and the Struggle for Authority -- Cross-Cultural Sex in Native North Carolina -- The Sexual Regulation of Servant Women and Subcultures of Resistance -- White Reputations "Blacken'd and Made Loose" -- Sexualized Violence and the Embodiment of Race -- Epilogue: Dangerous Liaisons."Over the course of the eighteenth century, race came to seem as corporeal as sex. Kirsten Fischer has mined unpublished court records and travel literature from colonial North Carolina to reveal how early notions of racial difference were shaped by illicit sexual relationships and the sanctions imposed on those who conducted them. Fischer shows how the personal--and yet often very public--sexual lives of Native American, African American, and European American women and men contributed to the new racial order in this developing slave society. Liaisons between European men and native women, among white and black servants, and between servants and masters, as well as sexual slander among whites and acts of sexualized violence against slaves, were debated, denied, and recorded in the courtrooms of colonial North Carolina. Indentured servants, slaves, Cherokee and Catawba women, and other members of less privileged groups sometimes resisted colonial norms, making sexual choices that irritated neighbors, juries, and magistrates and resulted in legal penalties and other acts of retribution. The sexual practices of ordinary people vividly bring to light the little-known but significant ways in which notions of racial difference were alternately contested and affirmed before the American Revolution. Fischer makes an innovative contribution to the history of race, class, and gender in early America by uncovering a detailed record of illicit sexual exchanges in colonial North Carolina and showing how acts of resistance to sexual rules complicated ideas about inherent racial difference."--Publisher's description.

- More than genes : what science can tell us about toxic chemicals, development, and the risk to our children / by Agin, D. P.(CARDINAL)780437;
Includes bibliographical references and index.The richness of our ignorance -- Pollution babies -- From one cell to a hundred trillion -- The fetal brain -- Life in utero : shaping or destruction? -- The endless fetal hangover -- Unborn days and sexuality -- Developmental brain disabilities -- Genes, the womb, and mental illness -- Much ado about IQ -- Culture, poverty, and fetal destruction.Biologist Dan Agin marshals new scientific evidence to argue that the fetal environment can be just as crucial as genetic hard-wiring or even later environment in determining our intelligence and behavior. Stress during pregnancy, for example, puts children at far greater risk of anxiety disorders. Nutritional deprivation during early fetal development may elevate the risk of late onset schizophrenia. And exposure to a whole host of environmental toxins, especially lead, as well as maternal use of alcohol, tobacco or drugs can have impacts ranging from mild cognitive impairment to ADHD, autism, schizophrenia, and other mental disorders. Agin argues that differences in IQ among ethnic and socioeconomic groups are far more attributable to higher levels of stress and chemical toxicity in inner cities--which compromise the health of the fetus--than to genetics. The good news is that there are ways to protect fetal development.--From publisher description.
