Since giving up the sergeant's stripes he had earned during the War Between the States, Ben Rollins had pinned on the badge of a lawman, and he had set up housekeeping with his devoted wife, Sue, in the town of Spanish Wells. Now, Rollins was heading out of town with one object in mind--to bring in a wanted man. Unbeknownst to Rollins, his trip would be a short one. By the time he returned to Spanish Wells, Sue had been killed in the course of a bank robbery. - Still time : a novel / by Hegland, Jean,author.(CARDINAL)359828;
"From the author of Into the Forest, a moving novel about memory, Shakespeare's green worlds, and the power of reconciliation. Until John Wilson met the warm, wise woman who became his fourth wife, the object of his most intense devotion had always been the work of William Shakespeare. From his feat of memorizing Romeo and Juliet and half a dozen other plays as a student to his evangelical zeal as a professor, John's faith in the Bard has shaped his life. But now his mental powers have been diminished by dementia, and his wife has reluctantly moved him to a residential care facility. Even there, as he struggles to understand what's going on around him, John's knowledge of the plays helps him make sense of his fractured world. Yet, when his only child, Miranda-with whom he has not spoken since a devastating misunderstanding a decade ago-comes to visit, John begins to question some of his deepest convictions. In his devotion to Shakespeare, did he lose his way? Did he wrong the child who wronged him? The story of an imperfect father and a wounded daughter's efforts to achieve some authentic connection even now, Still Time celebrates redemption and the gift of second chances. It is that rare novel that ends on a resounding note of hope, reminding us that there is always time to live fully and love deeply, so long as we are alive."--

Includes bibliographical references (pages 134-146) and index."Made in the Americas reveals the overlooked history of Asia's profound influence on the arts of the colonial Americas. Beginning in the 16th century, European outposts in the New World, especially those in New Spain, became a major nexus of the Asian export trade. Craftsmen from Canada to Peru, inspired by the sophisticated designs and advanced techniques of these imported goods, combined Asian styles with local traditions to produce unparalleled furniture, silverwork, textiles, ceramics, lacquer, painting and architectural ornaments. Among the exquisite objects featured in this book, from across the hemisphere and spanning the 17th to the early 19th centuries, are folding screens made in Mexico in imitation of imported Japanese and Chinese screens; blue-and-white talavera ceramics copied from Chinese porcelains; luxuriously woven textiles, made to replicate fine silks and cottons from China and India; devotional statues that adapt Buddhist gods into Christian saints; and "japanned" furniture produced in Boston that simulates Asian lacquer finishes. The stories told by the objects gathered in Made in the Americas bring to life the rich cultural interchange and the spectacular arts of the first global age"--Amazon.com.

- Invincible summer : a novel / by Adams, Alice,1975-author.(CARDINAL)414609;
Inseparable throughout college, Eva, Benedict, Sylvie, and Lucien graduate in 1997, into an exhilarating world on the brink of a new millennium. Hopelessly in love with playboy Lucien and eager to shrug off the socialist politics of her upbringing, Eva breaks away to work for a big bank. Benedict, a budding scientist who's pined for Eva for years, stays on to complete his PhD in physics, devoting his life to chasing particles as elusive as the object of his affection. Siblings Sylvie and Lucien, never much inclined toward mortgages or monogamy, pursue more bohemian existences--she as an aspiring artist and he as a club promoter and professional partyer. But as their twenties give way to their thirties, the group struggles to navigate their thwarted dreams. Scattered across Europe and no longer convinced they are truly the masters of their fates, the once close-knit friends find themselves filled with longing for their youth--and for one another. Broken hearts and broken careers draw the foursome together again, but in ways they never could have imagined. --

- Traditional Jewish papercuts : an inner world of art and symbol / by Shadur, Joseph.(CARDINAL)336158; Shadur, Yehudit.(CARDINAL)336159;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 247-254) and index.Paper, papercutting arts, and shadow theater figures in different cultures -- Jewish papercutting traditions in Ashkenazi and Sephardi communities : an historical/cultural overview -- Uses, symbols, and inscriptions -- A closer look at some Jewish folk papercuts throughout the Diaspora -- Studies and conjectures in sources, symbolisms, and techniques -- Jews in silhouette -- Documenting a tradition -- Multiples, imitations, and frauds : folk art and the collectors' market -- So you've found an old Jewish papercut!"The making of devotional papercuts is a relatively little-known aspect of traditional Jewish folk art and culture. While many ritual objects treasured today as "Judaica" were crafted from expensive materials, often by gentile artisans executing paid commissions, even the poorest Jew could afford paper, pencil, and penknife with which to make a papercut as a deeply felt, personal expression of faith. Many of these works are gems of unaffected artistic creation. More than any other form of Jewish art, the surviving old Jewish papercuts evoke the spirit and lore of the East-European shtetl and the North African mellah. By the mid-twentieth century, however, the venerable Jewish papercutting tradition had become another lost folk art." "This illustrated, full-color book, prefaced by Daniel Sperber and William L. Gross, features many Jewish papercuts from Eastern and Central Europe reproduced here for the first time. These, and such works from Middle Eastern, North African, and North American Jewish communities, incorporate an unparalleled wealth of Jewish symbols. Joseph and Yehudit Shadur's discussions of these configurations constitute a basic presentation of Jewish iconography of the last three centuries. Traditional Jewish Papercuts is the culmination of over 25 years of research on four continents."--Jacket.

All of the works of art are richly illustrated in color and described in authoritative texts by the curators of the Gulbenkian Museum. These magnificent pieces, which reflect the renowned art collector Calouste Gulbenkian's eclectic taste, include paintings by Rubens, Fragonard, Gainsborough, Turner, and Manet; silver from services created for the nobility of Russia and Western Europe; Roman medallions; Ottoman ceramics; Japanese lacquer ware; jewelry by Lalique; and books and textiles from both East and West. These works of art offer dazzling testimony to Gulbenkian's devotion to the quality of the individual object and to his refined connoisseurship. The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum was created under the terms of Gulbenkian's will in order to preserve under one roof the artworks in his collection--one of the preeminent art assemblages of the first half of the twentieth century. Gulbenkian, a successful businessman who was born in 1869 in Ottoman Turkey to an Armenian family, made his fortune in the oil industry. In April 1942, in the midst of World War II, he arrived in Lisbon seeking a peaceful place to live. Portugal had remained neutral in the conflict that was engulfing the world. Gulbenkian spent the rest of his life in Lisbon, where he died in 1955. As a collector--whether of ancient Egyptian art, Islamic art, or European painting and decorative arts--Gulbenkian acquired "only the best."

Although today these objects are distributed among several Florentine museums, they are presented here together. The book divides the fascinating history of the Medici family into a series of chapters each devoted to a major patron within the dynasty. These chapters provide a detailed history and description of the objects and their makers and the reasons they were commissioned or purchased. Vivid color photography, much of it especially commissioned, faithfully conveys the opulent beauty of this magnificent collection." "Originally bankers and merchants, the Medicis became identified as supporters of the workers and artisans of Florence in the late 14th century. Early in the 15th century the family began 300 years of almost uninterrupted control as popular leaders of the city. After his death in 1464, Cosimo, the first of the ruling Medicis, was given the title Pater Patriae (the father of his country) by his people. It was his grandson Lorenzo (the Magnificent) who patronised Botticelli, da Vinci, and Michelangelo." "The focus of the Medicis' collection was jewellery, gems, cameos, ornaments and exotic objects. It also included antique vases made using the pietra-dura technique, whose value was increased through elaborate borders made of gold, silver or enamel. Many were collected by Lorenzo il Magnifico. Treasures of Florence boasts a rich variety, from the works of Benvenuto Cellini, through Baroque art, to exotic pieces from Asia, Mexico, and India. The final chapter examines the exquisite jewels which belonged to the Elector Anna Maria Ludovica, the last ruler of the Medici dynasty."--Jacket.
