- The town crazy / by Roche, Suzzy,author.(CARDINAL)371792;
"The Town Crazy is set in the sleepy town of Hanzloo, Pennsylvania, a suburban Catholic community in 1961. A single father moves into town with his young son, which arouses suspicion from the husbands and the interest of the wives, but at the same time, one of the wives seems to be losing her mind, and no one knows what to do. A contemporary, often humorous take on a bygone era, The Town Crazy also delves into the terror and cruelty of childhood, the dangerous loneliness of failing marriages, sexual repression and desire, and the intersection of art and religion, all culminating in a tragedy for which everyone in the town bears some responsibility."--Provided by publisher.

- The Borgias : power and depravity in renaissance Italy / [sound recording] / by Strathern, Paul.; Elfer, Julian.nrt; Tantor Media, Inc.; TEI Landmark Audio.;
Read by Julian Elfer.The Borgia family have become a byword for evil. Corruption, incest, ruthless megalomania, avarice, and vicious cruelty all have been associated with their name. And yet, paradoxically, this family lived when the Renaissance was coming into its full flowering in Italy. Examples of infamy flourished alongside some of the finest art produced in western history. This is but one of several paradoxes associated with the Borgia family. For the family which produced corrupt popes, depraved princes, and poisoners, would also produce a saint. These paradoxes which so characterize the Borgias have seldom been examined in great detail. Previously history has tended to condemn, or attempt in part to exonerate, this remarkable family. Yet in order to understand the Borgias, much more is needed than evidence for and against. The Borgias must be related to their time, together with the world which enabled them to flourish. Within this context the Renaissance itself takes on a very different aspect. Was the corruption part of the creation, or vice versa?

- Honey : a novel / by Lodato, Victor,author.(CARDINAL)558316;
Honey Fasinga, the glamorous daughter of a notorious New Jersey mobster, is returning home at last, ready to reckon with her violent past. As a rebellious teenager, Honey managed to escape her father's circle of influence and reinvent herself in a world of art and beauty, working for a high-end auction house in Los Angeles. Now in her twilight years, she decides to return home and unexpectedly falls in love. But in her family, nothing has changed. When her grandnephew Michael bursts into her life in what appears to be a drug-fueled frenzy, and her Lexus gets jacked, it's hard to keep minding her own business. As old cruelties begin to resurface, Honey is no longer sure what she really wants--to forgive or to avenge. This electrifying literary breakout from PEN USA Award-winning author Victor Lodato is a masterful and deeply moving portrait of love in all its forms, of moral ambiguity, and of inspiring change--a story of female rage that asks the question: What are the limits of compassion in a world gone mad?

- Moriarty the patriot. [manga] by Takeuchi, Ryosuke,author.(CARDINAL)814793; Doyle, Arthur Conan,1859-1930.Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.(CARDINAL)745646; Miyoshi, Hikaru,illustrator.(CARDINAL)851545;
"The untold story of Sherlock Holmes' greatest rival, Moriarty! Before he was Sherlock's rival, Moriarty fought against the unfair class system in London by making sure corrupt nobility got their comeuppance. But even the most well-intentioned plans can spin out of control--will Moriarty's dream of a more just and equal world turn him into a hero...or a monster? In the late 19th century, Great Britain rules over a quarter of the world. Nobles sit in their fancy homes in comfort and luxury, while the working class slaves away at their jobs. When young Albert James Moriarty's upper-class family adopts two lower-class orphans, the cruelty the boys experience at his family's hands cements Albert's hatred of the nobility he was born into. He asks the older of the two boys--who has a genius mind and a killer instinct--to help him rid the world of evil, starting with Albert's own family!"--Publisher description.

- Threads : from the refugee crisis / by Evans, Kate(Illustrator),author,artist.(CARDINAL)629911;
"With a heavy heart and bearing artistic gifts, Kate Evans draws the faces of refugees coming from Syria, Africa, and elsewhere to "The Jungle," a makeshift camp in Calais, France, and in doing so Evans captures the refugees' full humanity, intelligence, and suffering as they search for family, home, and dignity. An antidote to the anti-immigrant populism that is raging across the world, Threads is the real story that puts a human face on a very topical news item. We learn of these families' and individuals' struggles at the hands of police, racist gangs, and human traffickers. We learn of their struggle for food, for blankets, and bread. Much to our dismay, the French police have arbitrary rules like no dry bedding or bread allowed in the camps. The cruelty and immense wave of suffering Evans sees and captures in her art appears to be crushing her but like the generous soul she is, Evans goes deeper and deeper into the camps and finds people opening up and sharing their stories. The art work is excellent, the stories are heart-breaking. This is a must-read for people wanting a human dimension on a policy wonk "current event." Highly recommended."--
