A career in biomedical engineering / by Abramovitz, Melissa,1954-author.(CARDINAL)364672;
Includes bibliographical references and index.What does a biomedical engineer do? -- How do you become a biomedical engineer? -- What skills and personal qualities matter most, and why? -- What is it like to work as a biomedical engineer? -- Advancement and other job opportunities -- What does the future hold for biomedical engineers? -- Interview with a biomedical engineer."Biomedical engineers work in one of the fastest-growing engineering fields. Their work involves applying principles of engineering and biology to design and create devices, drugs, and other products and technologies that improve health care. While biomedical engineering is a fairly new engineering discipline, biomedical engineers do the same types of things that other engineers have done for thousands of years. The International Federation of Consulting Engineers defines engineers as problem solvers, organizers, calculators and designers. They are capable of clearly defining a problem and its relevant constraints (such as time, cost, etc) and providing a simple solution."--Grades 9 to 12.

Stream stability at highway structures / by Lagasse, Peter F.(Peter Frederick),1937-(CARDINAL)327627; United States.Federal Highway Administration.(CARDINAL)139839; Ayres Associates.(CARDINAL)328982;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 131-134)."This document provides guidelines for identifying stream instability problems at highway stream crossings and for the selection and design of appropriate countermeasures to mitigate potential damages to bridges and other highway components at stream crossings. It is a metricated update of the version published in 1991 under Contract No. DTFH61-89-C-00003. The HEC-20 manual covers geomorphic and hydraulic factors that affect stream stability and provides a step-by-step analysis procedure for evaluating stream stability problems. Guidelines and criteria for selecting countermeasures for stream instability problems are summarized, and the design of three countermeasures (spurs, guide banks, and check dams) is presented in detail. Conceptual design considerations for many other countermeasures are summarized"--Technical report documentation page.Sponsored by Office of Technology Applications, HTA-22, Federal Highway Administration, and performed by Ayres Associates, formerly Resource Consultants & Engineers, under contract to GKY and Assoc.,

Development of an integrated survey vehicle for measuring pavement surface conditions at highway speeds / by Wambold, James C.(CARDINAL)320142; Anderson, D. A.(David A.),1936-(CARDINAL)312078; Meyer, W. E.(Wolfgang E.),1910-(CARDINAL)326898; United States.Federal Highway Administration.(CARDINAL)139839; Nittany Engineers and Management Consultants.;
Includes bibliographical references.v. 1. Technical report -- v. 2. Technical details.Final report;The objective of this study was to develop an integrated survey vehicle for measuring pavement surface conditions at highway speeds. This was accomplished by determining the requirements and operating characteristics for such a system, preparing a design, and estimating initial and operating costs. Volume 1 contains a review of the data and measurement needs for pavement condition surveys. The equipment available and under development for this purpose are identified with emphasis on measurements at highway speeds. Volume 2 contains detailed information about the design, costs, specifications, and software associated with the integrated survey vehicle. The system drawings for the vehicle are provided.Performed by Nittany Engineers & Management Consultants, Inc., for FHWA Office of Engineering and Highway Operations R&D, under contract no.
