Final Jeopardy : man vs. machine and the quest to know everything / by Baker, Stephen,1955 November 15-(CARDINAL)491290;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 267-268).The germ of the Jeopardy machine -- And representing the humans-- -- Blue J is born -- Educating Blue J -- Watson's face -- Watson takes on humans -- AI -- A season of jitters -- Watson looks for work -- How to play the game -- The match.Researchers at IBM launched a billion-dollar project to develop a machine that could compete in the quiz show Jeopardy--and win. The machine faced off in a high-ratings match against two former champions, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Journalist Stephen Baker carries readers on a captivating journey from the IBM labs to the showdown in Hollywood. The story features brilliant Ph.D.s, Hollywood moguls, knowledge-obsessed Jeopardy masters--and a very special collection of silicon and circuitry named Watson. It was a classic match of Man vs. Machine, not seen since the chess-playing computer Deep Blue bested the world's reigning grandmaster, Garry Kasparov. And Watson needed to do more than churn through chess moves or find a relevant Web page--it had to understand language, including puns and irony, and master everything from history and literature to science, arts, and entertainment.--Adapted from publisher description.

The Grandmaster : Magnus Carlsen and the match that made chess great again / by Butler, Brin-Jonathan,author.(CARDINAL)410587;
Chapter 1: A night at the Plaza -- Chapter 2: The Prodigies -- Chapter 3: Trompowsky -- Chapter 4: Still searching for Bobby Fischer -- Chapter 5: The Hustlers -- Chapter 6: "Why can't he beat this guy?" -- Chapter 7: A place that time forgot -- Chapter 8: On the edge of the abyss -- Chapter 9: "I am unusual, a little" -- Chapter 10: Queen Judit -- Chapter 11: Finding Josh Waitzkin -- Chapter 12: 50.Qh6+!!The first week of November 2016, as a crowd of people swarmed outside of Manhattan's Trump Tower to rail against the election of Donald Trump, hundreds more descended on the city's South Street Seaport. But they weren't there to protest. They were there to watch the World Chess Championship between Norway's Magnus Carlsen and Russia's Sergey Karjakin-what by the time it was over would be front-page news and thought by many the greatest finish in chess history. The story lines were riveting. The championship hadn't been hosted in New York City, the de facto world capital of the sport, in more than two decades. With both Carlsen and Karjakin just 25 years old, the tournament organizers were billing it as a battle of the millennials-the first time the championship had been waged among the generation that grew up playing chess primarily against computers. And perhaps most intriguing were all the geopolitical connections to the match. Originally from Crimea, Karjakin had recently repatriated to Russia under the direct assistance of Putin. Carlsen, meanwhile, had expressed admiration for Donald Trump, and his first move of the tournament he played with a smirk what's called a Trompowsky Attack. Then there was the Russian leader of the World Chess Federation being barred from attending due to US sanctions, and chess fanatic and Trump adviser Peter Thiel being called on to make the honorary first move in sudden death. That the tournament required sudden death was a shock. Oddsmakers had given Carlsen, the defending champion, an 80% chance of winning. It would take everything he had to retain his title. In doing so, he would firmly make his case to be considered the greatest player chess has ever seen.
