With deft use of examples of humor and wordplay, Steven Pinker weaves our vast knowledge of language into a compelling story: language is a human instinct, wired into our brains by evolution. The Language Instinct received the William James Book Prize from the American Psychological Association and the Public Interest Award from the Linguistics Society of America. This edition includes an update on advances in the science of language since The Language Instinct was first published.

- The AI con : how to fight big tech's hype and create the future we want / by Bender, Emily M.,1973-author(CARDINAL)899783; Hanna, Alex,author.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages [199]-257) and index.An introduction to the AI hype -- It's alive! The type of thinking machines -- Leisure for me, gig work for thee: AI hype at work -- If it quacks like a doc: AI hype and social services -- Artifice or intelligence? AI hype in art, journalism, and science -- I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that: AI doomers, AI boosters, and why none of that makes sense -- Do you believe in hope after hype?"Is artificial intelligence going to take over the world? Have big tech scientists created an artificial lifeform that can think on its own? Is it going to put authors, artists, and others out of business? Are we about to enter an age where computers are better than humans at everything? The answer to these questions, linguist Emily M. Bender and sociologist Alex Hanna make clear, is "no," "they wish," "LOL," and "definitely not." This kind of thinking is a symptom of a phenomenon known as "AI hype." Hype looks and smells fishy: It twists words and helps the rich get richer by justifying data theft, motivating surveillance capitalism, and devaluing human creativity in order to replace meaningful work with jobs that treat people like machines. In The AI Con, Bender and Hanna offer a sharp, witty, and wide-ranging take-down of AI hype across its many forms. Bender and Hanna show you how to spot AI hype, how to deconstruct it, and how to expose the power grabs it aims to hide. Armed with these tools, you will be prepared to push back against AI hype at work, as a consumer in the marketplace, as a skeptical newsreader, and as a citizen holding policymakers to account. Together, Bender and Hanna expose AI hype for what it is: a mask for Big Tech's drive for profit, with little concern for who it affects." --

- Talk on the wild side : why language can't be tamed / by Greene, Robert Lane,author.(CARDINAL)502688;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 217-222) and index."Language is a wild thing. It is vague and anarchic. Style, meaning, and usage are continually on the move. Throughout history, for every mutation, idiosyncrasy, and ubiquitous mistake, there have been countervailing rules, pronouncements and systems making some attempt to bring language to heel. From the utopian language-builder to the stereotypical grammatical stickler to the programmer trying to teach a computer to translate, Lane Greene takes the reader through a multi-disciplinary survey of the many different ways in which we attempt to control language, exploring the philosophies, motivations, and complications of each. The result is a highly readable caper that covers history, linguistics, politics, and grammar with the ease and humor of a dinner party anecdote. Talk on the Wild Side is both a guide to the great debates and controversies of usage, and a love letter to language itself. Holding it together is Greene's infectious enthusiasm for his subject. While you can walk away with the finer points of who says "whom" and the strange history of "buxom" schoolboys, most of all, it inspires awe in language itself: for its elegance, resourcefulness, and power."--publisher's description.Introduction: The Case of the Missing Whom -- Bringing the universe to order -- Is language logic? -- Machines for talking -- Buxom, but never nice -- Language tamers with armies and navies -- Whom in a biker bar -- Apologies to Orwell -- Conclusion: Weirder and more wonderful.

- From heritage to destiny : an autobiography / by Bishop, Charlie(Charles Landon),author.;
Charles Landon Bishop enjoyed a healthy and active childhood in the backwoods of Western North Carolina, perfecting all the mountain skills of axes, saws, fly fishing, unique plant identification and use, music and so much more. Charles (or Charlie as he became known) attended Berea College in Kentucky, then joined the US Air Force as a Russian linguist, serving at the National Security Agency and later in Peshawar, Pakistan at the foothills of the great Himalayan Mountains. When the Berlin Wall was erected, he was ordered back to the states to attend Officer Candidate School to become an officer. Specializing in computer programming, he developed methods to organize the vast amounts of intelligence information being collected throughout the European and Asiatic theatres. He was soon assigned to a position flying on the EC-121R reconnaissance aircraft in Southeast Asia during the VietNam War. Follow-on assignments included the Pentagon; the Air Force Military Personnel Center and the North American Air Defence command; Electronic Security Command; Electronic Security Group in Berlin; Electronic Security Command Pacific and Electronic Combat Director; Pacific; Tactical Air command; Combined Forces Command, Korea and finally United States Air Forces, Europe. Brigadier general Bishop retired from the Air Force in 1992 and, with his wife, Earla, retired in San Antonio, Texas where he established and managed a defense consulting company for the next 23 years. --Page 4 of cover.

- Who wrote this? : how AI and the lure of efficiency threaten human writing / by Baron, Naomi S.,author.(CARDINAL)511712;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 269-300) and index.Prologue : human writers meet the AI language sausage machine -- The journey to literacy -- Why humans write, and rewrite -- English comp and Its aftermath -- The dream of language machines -- The natural language processing sausage machine -- Machine translation rises again -- Machines emerge as authors -- AI comes for the writing professions -- The creative side of AI -- AI as Jeeves -- Human-AI symbiosis -- Do we always welcome AI? -- Coda : why human authorship matters."Would you read this book if a computer wrote it? Would you even know? And why would it matter? Today's eerily impressive artificial intelligence writing tools present us with a crucial challenge: As writers, do we unthinkingly adopt AI's time-saving advantages or do we stop to weigh what we gain and lose when heeding their siren call? To understand how AI is redefining what it means to write and think, linguist and educator Naomi Baron leads us on a journey connecting the dots between human literacy and today's technology. From nineteenth century lessons in composition, to mathematician Alan Turing's work creating a machine for deciphering war-time messages, to contemporary engines like ChatGPT, Baron gives readers a spirited overview of the emergence of both literacy and AI, and a glimpse of their possible future. As the technology becomes increasingly sophisticated and fluent, it's tempting to take the easy way out and let AI do the work for us. Baron cautions that such efficiency isn't always in our interest. As AI plies us with suggestions or full-blown text, we risk losing not just our technical skills but the power of writing as a springboard for personal reflection and unique expression. Funny, informed, and conversational, Who Wrote This? urges us as individuals and as communities to make conscious choices about the extent to which we collaborate with AI. The technology is here to stay. Baron shows us how to work with AI and how to spot where it risks diminishing the valuable cognitive and social benefits of being literate"--

- Kingdom of characters : the language revolution that made China modern / by Tsu, Jing,author.(CARDINAL)473724;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 283-304) and index.A Mandarin in revolution (1900) -- Chinese typewriters and America (1912) -- Tipping the scale of telegraphy (1925) -- The librarian's card catalog (1938) -- When "Peking" became "Beijing" (1958) -- Entering into the computer (1979) -- The digital sinosphere (2020)."After a meteoric rise, China today is one of the world's most powerful nations. Just a century ago, it was a crumbling empire, with literacy reserved for the elite few. In Kingdom of Characters, Jing Tsu argues that China's greatest and most daunting challenge was a linguistic one. Just as important as China's technological and industrial advances and political maneuvers was the century-long fight to make the Chinese language-with its many dialects and complex character-based script-accessible to the modern world of global trade and digital technology. Kingdom of Characters follows the bold and cunning innovators who adapted the Chinese language to a world defined by the West and its alphabet: the exiled reformer who risked a death sentence to advocate for Mandarin as a national language, the Chinese Muslim poet who laid the groundwork for Chairman Mao's phonetic writing system, the imprisoned computer engineer who devised input codes for Chinese characters on the lid of a tea cup, among others. Without the advances they enabled, China might never have become the dominating force we know today. The revolution of the Chinese script is just as breathtaking as China's transformation into a capitalist juggernaut, in large part because those linguistic innovations literally enabled China's reinvention. With larger-than-life characters and an unexpected perspective on the major events of China's tumultuous twentieth century, Tsu reveals how language is both a technology to be perfected and a subtle yet potent power to be exercised and expanded"--
