The Narrows : a novel / by Petry, Ann,1908-1997,author.(CARDINAL)709815; Clark, Keith C.(Fiction writer),writer of introduction.;
Includes bibliographical references.Link Williams is a handsome and brilliant Dartmouth graduate who tends bar due to the lack of better opportunities for an African American man in a staid mid-century Connecticut town. The routine of Link's life is interrupted when he intervenes to save a woman from a late-night attack. Drinking in a bar together after the incident, "Camilo" discovers that her rescuer is African American and he learns that she is white. Unbeknownst to him, "Camilo" (actually Camilla Treadway Sheffield) is a wealthy married woman who has crossed the town's racial divide to relieve the tedium of her life. Thus brought together by chance, Link and Camilla draw each other into furtive encounters that violate the rigid and uncompromising social codes of their own town and times. As The Narrows sweeps ahead to its shattering denouement, Petry shines a harsh yet richly truthful light on the deforming harm that race and class wreak on human lives. In a fascinating introduction to this new edition, Keith Clark discusses the prescience with which Petry chronicled the ways tabloid journalism, smug elitism, and mob mentality distort and demonize African American men. -- from back cover.

The collector : a novel / by Silva, Daniel,1960-author.(CARDINAL)342514;
"On the morning after the Venice Preservation Society's annual black-tie gala, art restorer and legendary spy Gabriel Allon enters his favorite coffee bar on the island of Murano to find General Cesare Ferrari, the commander of the Art Squad, eagerly awaiting his arrival. The Carabinieri have made a startling discovery in the Amalfi villa of a murdered South African shipping tycoon--a secret vault containing an empty frame and stretcher matching the dimensions of the world's most valuable missing painting. General Ferrari asks Gabriel to quietly track down the artwork before the trail once again goes cold... The painting in question is The Concert by Johannes Vermeer, one of thirteen works of art stolen from Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in 1990. With the help of a most unlikely ally, a beautiful Danish computer hacker and professional thief, Gabriel soon discovers that the painting has changed hands as part of an illicit billion-dollar business deal involving a man code-named the Collector, an energy executive with close ties to the highest levels of Russian power. The missing masterpiece is the linchpin of a conspiracy that could plunge the world into a conflict of apocalyptic proportions."--

Solitary : unbroken by four decades in solitary confinement : my story of transformation and hope / by Woodfox, Albert,author.(CARDINAL)806639; George, Leslie,author.(CARDINAL)811108;
Includes index."Solitary" is the unforgettable life story of a man who served more than four decades in solitary confinement-in a 6-foot by 9-foot cell, 23 hours a day, in notorious Angola prison in Louisiana-all for a crime he did not commit. That Albert Woodfox survived was, in itself, a feat of extraordinary endurance against the violence and deprivation he faced daily. That he was able to emerge whole from his odyssey within America's prison and judicial systems is a triumph of the human spirit, and makes his book a clarion call to reform the inhumanity of solitary confinement in the U.S. and around the world. Arrested often as a teenager in New Orleans, inspired behind bars in his early twenties to join the Black Panther Party because of its social commitment and code of living, Albert was serving a 50-year sentence in Angola for armed robbery when on April 17, 1972, a white guard was killed. Albert and another member of the Panthers were accused of the crime and immediately put in solitary confinement by the warden. Without a shred of actual evidence against them, their trial was a sham of justice that gave them life sentences in solitary. Decades passed before Albert gained a lawyer of consequence; even so, sixteen more years and multiple appeals were needed before he was finally released in February 2016. Remarkably self-aware that anger or bitterness would have destroyed him in solitary confinement, sustained by the shared solidarity of two fellow Panthers, Albert turned his anger into activism and resistance. The Angola 3, as they became known, resolved never to be broken by the grinding inhumanity and corruption that effectively held them for decades as political prisoners. He survived to give us "Solitary," a chronicle of rare power and humanity that proves the better spirits of our nature can thrive against any odds.
