Includes bibliographical references and index."Particles and Waves examines how concepts and technologies from the realms of advanced scientific research impacted the development of abstract (or non-figurative) styles of artwork in postwar Southern California. Beginning in the 1920s and 1930s, scientists at institutions near Los Angeles including Mount Wilson Observatory, the California Institute for Technology, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, generated groundbreaking experimental research in astronomy and particle physics. During and after World War II, the region remained at the forefront of scientific inquiry in theoretical physics and its applications within aerospace engineering, industrial manufacturing, and communications technologies. Between 1945 and 1990, many artists in Los Angeles produced visually abstract artworks while closely engaging with scientific ideas, mathematical theories, and materials or processes derived from physics and engineering. The exhibition unites several generations of artists working in diverse materials and styles to examine how subfields of scientific investigation inspired a range of non-figurative artworks by practitioners concerned with light, energy, motion, and time. By drawing interdisciplinary connections between the work of early abstractionists and contemporary practitioners, the exhibition considers abstract artwork from Southern California in a new way. Particle and Waves is among more than 50 exhibitions and programs presented as part of Pacific Standard Time. Returning in September 2024 with its latest edition, PST ART: Art & Science Collide, this landmark regional event explores the intersections of art and science, both past and present. PST ART is a Getty initiative"--"Particles and Waves: Southern California Abstraction and Science, 1945-1990 exhibition held at the Palm Springs Art Museum, September 14, 2024- February 23, 2025"-- host institution website.

Reasons to look at the night sky / by Daniel, Danielle,author.;
"A sensitive and sweetly relatable middle-grade novel about a space-loving girl who learns how art and Indigenous Sky Stories can help her look at the world differently. Written in free verse from acclaimed author Danielle Daniel. Luna has always loved the night sky. She's an eleven-year-old who knows everything there is to know about space, and dreams of one day becoming an astronaut. The first step in her plan to get there is to ace the space unit in her science class and secure a spot in NASA's summer space camp. Luna's been counting down the days, and now that Christmas break is over, she's ready to hit the ground running. But when Luna's teacher is unexpectedly replaced with a substitute teacher, Mrs. Manitowabi, who is looking to shake up science class by bringing in art, Luna's carefully laid plans are crushed. At first, Luna struggles with new, unfamiliar class routines and procedures, but when Ms. Manitowabi introduces the class to Indigenous Sky Stories, Luna realizes she may not know as much about the night sky as she'd always thought. Can science combined with art actually be a good thing for a girl who loves numbers and facts -- certainties -- more than anything? Told in verse with graceful attention to detail, Reasons to Look at the Night Sky is an endearing and faithful look into the inner world of a sensitive middle schooler as she adapts to change -- at school, in her friendships and at home -- and begins to see the world in fantastic new ways."--

This fascinating book presents exciting new information on the art and cultures of these ancient peoples and features hundreds of gorgeous photographs of important artworks, artifacts, and ritual objects excavated from Amerindian archaeological sites. Drawing on excavation findings and extensive research, the contributors to the book document a succession of distinct ancient populations in the pre-Columbian world of the American Midwest and Southeast. A team of interdisciplinary scholars examines the connections between archaeological remains of different regions and the themes, forms, and rituals that continue in specific tribes of today. The book also includes the personal reflections of contemporary Native Americans who discuss their perspectives on the significance of the fascinating and beautiful prehistoric artifacts as well as their own cultural practices today"--Publisher description.
