Includes bibliographical references.Made at a critical juncture in Betye Saar's (born 1926) career, the enigmatic assemblage Black Girl's Window (1969) was recognized by the artist as a crucial link between her past and future even at the time she made it. Saar has drawn upon family history, spirituality, astrology and politics consistently throughout her 60-year career, and all are present in the prints, drawings and found material neatly ensconced within the gridded panes of the antique window frame that is the work's defining element. This in-depth study by curators Christophe Cherix and Esther Adler expands our understanding of Saar's early career and casts light on all that followed. Drawing on new research into the work's construction and materials, and on firsthand discussions with the artist regarding the making of Black Girl's Window and the themes behind her evocative imagery, this concise, generously illustrated volume explores one of Saar's best-known and most iconic works.

Chinese astrology : plain & simple : the only book you'll ever need / by Dee, Jonathan,1957-2010,author.(CARDINAL)422463;
Though perhaps less well-known here than its Western counterpart, Chinese astrology is every bit as illuminating and provides an equally valuable shortcut to self-knowledge. Jonathan Dee, the well-respected author of several books on astrology, tarot, and fortune-telling, reveals all the mysteries of the art in this informative volume. Filled with legends, charts, and history, it contains all of the essentials for working out your Chinese horoscope including the animal signs for each birthday year, month, and hour. Each sign receives a richly detailed and enlightening explanation. Among the amusing and informative tidbits here: The rat is considered to be the sign of charm and is noted for its shrewdness, enterprise, and wealth. Rats are also prosperous, entrepreneurial, obsessive, anxious, bossy, and mean. The ox is the sign of tenacity and prosperity and a symbol of fertility and muscular strength. People born under the ox are patient, contemplative, eloquent, chauvinistic, petty, and grumpy. The monkey is lively, complex, charming, diplomatic, and agile. Monkeys are also dishonest, sarcastic, lacking respect, and restless.

The ghost of Galileo : in a forgotten painting from the English Civil War / by Heilbron, J. L.(CARDINAL)721331;
In 1643/4 the once-famous Francis Cleyn painted the unhappy young heir of Corfe Castle, John Bankes, and his tutor, Dr Maurice Williams. The painter is now almost forgotten,the painting much neglected, and the sitters themselves have left little to mark their lives, but on the table of the painting lies a book, open to an immediately identifiable and very significant page. The representation omits the author's name and the book's title; it sits there as a code, as only viewers who had encountered the original and the characteristic figures on its frontispiece would have known its significance. The book is Galileo's Dialogue on the two chief world systems (1632), the defence of Copernican cosmology that incited the infamous clash between its author and the Church, and its presence in this painting is no accident, but instead a statement of learning, attitudes, and cosmopolitan engagement in European discourse by the painting's English subjects. Grasping hold of the clue, John Helibron deciphers the significance of this contentious book's appearance in a painting from Stuart England to unravel the interlocking threads of art history, political and religious history, and the history of science. Drawing on unexploited archival material and a wide range of printed works, he weaves together English court culture and Italian connections, as well as the astronomical and astrological knowledge propagated in contemporary almanacs and deployed in art, architecture, plays, masques, and political discourse. Heilbron also explores the biographies of Sir John, Sir Maurice, and the painter, Francis Clyne, setting them into the narrative of their rich and cultured history.

An Introduction to western sidereal astrology / by Bowser, Kenneth.(CARDINAL)786344;
In this easy to read book, Ken Bowser presents the basics of sidereal astrology from the viewpoint of a Western astrologer. Both astrologers and students of the science will appreciate the clear and helpful delineation of the planets, signs, houses, and aspects as presented in the sidereal chart. Ken also examines the forty-five planet combinations, looking at each in depth and presenting the unique characteristics each represents. All of these principles are illustrated with examples that serve as a guide for interpretation. Also included are three appendices: historical information, the origin of the exaltations, and the tropical-sidereal debate. An Introduction to Western Sidereal Astrology is a modest title for this excellent book, which provides a basic overview of sidereal astrology as it has developed in the West since the rediscovery of the ancient Babylonian sidereal zodiac at the end of the nineteenth century. Arising out of forty years of practice with sidereal astrology, this book is a gift to the world, representing the reemergence in our time of an astrology based upon the actual positions of the stars themselves and offering insightful interpretations of the stellar script as it comes to expression in the horoscope. - Robert Powell Ph. D., author of History of the Zodiac and many other works, and co-author of the recently published book The Astrological Revolution. With An Introduction to Western Sidereal Astrology, Ken Bowser has produced a valuable contribution to a literature that is both scholarly and practical. His careful, well-resourced explanations of the Babylonian origination of the zodiac (fixed to the celestial sphere and not their equinoxes) and its reintroduction into modern astrology, are a must-read for both students and professionals. On the practical side, he shows astrologers who want to try out the sidereal zodiac how to use it in everyday work. His outstanding planet combinations, which are independent of the zodiac, can be used by anyone and everyone who wants to master the art of astrology.--Ken Irving, Editor, American Astrology, Horoscope Guide Bowser skillfully and eloquently leads the reader through a tour of the complex issues at the heart of the zodiac issue with a level of clarity that can only be conveyed by someone who has attained a deep and comprehensive understanding of his subject. Ken Bowser is incontrovertibly qualified to write the book of this title, and he has chosen his moment well. Deborah Houlding, Editor, The Traditional Astrologer and skyscript.co.uk"--Amazon.com.
