Young in New York : a memoir of a Victorian girlhood / by Dana, Nathalie,1878-(CARDINAL)224608;
In 1878, when Nathalie Dana was born, the New York Central trains ran in the middle of Fourth Avenue (now rechristened Park), Lexington Avenue was ten years old, and there was a bright blue farmhouse at the corner of Fifth and Seventy-first. Mrs. Dana, the daughter of an Episcopal minister, watched her native city develop from a comfortable and leisurely town into a fantastic megalopolis, and here, writing in the tradition of Edith Wharton, she brilliantly recreates the climate and attitudes of upper-middle-class life in New York during the crucial period of transition from the nineteenth century to the twentieth. Mrs. Dana has total recall--not only of the details of fashion, interior decoration, architecture, landscaping, cultural activities, hospitality, and social life--but of manners and mores. Whether discussing the simple pleasures of her schooldays at Brearley or the lavish. entertainments of the Four Hundred, she evokes this lost world in witty, stylish prose, supplemented with sixteen pages of photographs from her family album. Two chapters originally appeared in the New York Historical Society Quarterly. Mrs. Dana's father was the Reverend Cornelius Bishop Smith, Rector of St. James Episcopal Church. In 1911 she married Richard Dana, Jr., the architect grandson of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Richard Dana (author of Two Years Before the Mast).--Adapted from dust jacket.New York in the nineteenth century -- Our house on Lenox Hill -- Ridgefield summers -- Beside the sea -- School days -- A stroll down the avenue -- The new intellectual climate -- The arts and the life of the mind -- Munich and music -- Adventures in Italy -- A new life.

Approaching environmental issues confronting society from a technological perspective has spawned significant controversy, and the books in this set present all sides of the debate. Designed to complement science curricula, the set also covers relevant history and new green technologies and innovations that will contribute to the field in the future. Environmental Engineering: Designing a Sustainable Future examines how this field, which incorporates not only aspects of art and design but also physics, geology, ecology, and the chemistry of matter, evolved from a discipline of civil engineering. Environmental engineers learn how to work with nature to improve and control the quality of the land, air, and water for the benefit of human and nonhuman cohabitation. Sidebars, figures, and case studies enhance fundamental concepts and examine urgent issues related to the "natural future" of the environment. The volume includes information on: aerodynamics; ecological and energy "architecture"; energy-efficient electronics; innovations in personal vehicles; landscape design; micro climates; solar homes; sustainable manufacturing; transit systems; and wastewater. The book contains 50 color photographs and line illustrations, five appendixes, a glossary, a detailed list of print and Internet resources, and an index. Green Technology is essential for high school students, teachers, and general readers who seek information on the important issues that affect the environment worldwide.
