III The Biology of the Cosmos -- The Gorgon's Head! -- Raise Your Glasses to the Skies! -- Life, But Not as We Know It! -- To Boldly Go... -- Somewhere over the Rainbow -- Where Is Everybody?.The Cosmic Mystery Tour takes us on a lightning tour of the mysteries of the universe enlivened by brief stories of the colourful characters who created modern science. It explores hot topics in physics and astronomy, including the recent discovery of gravitational waves; the quest for the origin of dark matter; the study of the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy; the ongoing search for Earth-like exoplanets; the search for signals from extraterrestrials; and the development of technologies to send spacecraft to the stars. The first part of the book explores the laws that govern the universe. Physics is a spiritual quest to find deep meaning in the cosmos. Its goal is to provide a concise, but accurate description of the world that accounts for all the amazing features that it contains. The second part takes a look at the history of the cosmos, studies its geography and explores some of its architectural highlights such as red giants, white dwarfs, neutron stars and the ultimate cosmic mysteries--supermassive black holes. The last part considers the possibility that life might exist elsewhere in the universe, and explores the cosmos from the outer fringes of science fiction to the ongoing search for alien civilizations.

- Ant architecture : the wonder, beauty, and science of underground nests / by Tschinkel, Walter R.,(Walter Reinhart),1940-Author(DLC)no 99057649 ;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 215-220) and index.Soil, Ants, and Life Underground -- Revealing the Shape of Empty Spaces -- Meet the Architects -- An Inventory of Ant Nests -- Moving House -- A Diversity of Architectural Plans -- Ants and Soils -- Division of Labor and the Superorganism -- The Evolution of Nest Building by Ants -- Afterword: The Future."Many animals, from birds to insects, build structures using wood, soil, or a range other materials. Surprisingly to most people, a similarly diverse array of animal homes exist underground, in the hidden world beneath our feet. This is particularly true for ants who excavate large and complex nests in which they shelter, reproduce and generally go about their lives. Despite the existence of this vast underground world, it has remained largely unexplored. Walter Tschinkel, however, has spent his career researching underground ant nests in his home state of Florida (where they are particularly prevalent) and this book is his story of discovery about what he has learned about these nests and they reveal about ant biology and behavior more broadly. Tschinkel starts the book by describing just how he studies ants nest - an arduous excavation process which involves first filling the nests with plaster, molten metal or wax. But this is a book driven by fascinating questions and the experiments the author has devised to try and answer them. How does nest architecture vary across ant species? How are new nests excavated during colony relocation? Are the ants organized within the nest? Do ants have "architectural plans?" What is the effect of all this nest excavation on soils? And how does the division of labor within the nest work? Ultimately, Tschinkel provides answers to many of these questions, but also acknowledges what mysteries, including why nests evolved in the first place, still remain. In telling this story, Tschinkel introduces readers to the surprising beauty and architectural complexity of underground ant nests and to how scientific research on them is done"--.

- For the bees : a handbook for happy beekeeping / by Chapman, Tara Dawn,author.; Brown, Caroline(Caroline Josephine),illustrator.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages [214]-215) and index.Preface -- Honey bee biology -- A honey bee's home -- Honey bee nutrition -- Getting started beekeeping -- Performing a hive inspection -- Understanding the queen bee -- Feeding honey bees -- All things swarming : colony reproduction -- Growing an apiary : making increases -- Parasites, pathogens, and pests -- Harvesting from the hive -- Beekeeping through the seasons -- Ensuring beekeeping success : common mistakes and best practices."The path to becoming a successful beekeeper begins with a deep understanding of the bees themselves. Taking an approach that is both holistic and practical, Tara Chapman, founder and operator of Austin's beloved Two Hives Honey, begins with a primer on honey bee biology and nutrition as well as beehive architecture. (Did you ever wonder why honeycombs are composed of tiny hexagons?) A little scientific knowledge goes a long way: a beekeeper who understands how these fascinating creatures work will be better equipped to recognize a particular colony's needs, make sound decisions when the unexpected happens, and adapt their care regimen to changing conditions. Moving beyond the basics, Chapman shows potential beekeepers how to spot pests and diseases; manage swarms (those bees aren't angry; they're just looking for a good home); and, of course, harvest delicious homegrown honey. Imbued with the joy of the beekeeping journey, For the Bees provides practical visual explanations through appealing illustrations that, alongside Chapman's own stories from the bee yard, share the charms of these essential insects."--
