Fundamental properties of asphalt-aggregate interactions including adhesion and absorption / by Curtis, Christine W.(CARDINAL)325433; Ensley, Keith.; Epps, Jon A.(CARDINAL)311393; Strategic Highway Research Program (U.S.)(CARDINAL)298325;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 595-603).Introduction: Adhesion and stripping models: Chemistry of the asphalt-aggregate bond -- Asphalt-aggregate interactions at the interface -- Chemistry and morphology of the aggregate -- Chemistry of aging and adsorption of asphalt-aggregate pairs -- Chemical and physical properties of asphalt in the structured interphase region and their influence on mix properties -- Effect of aggregate, additives and fines on asphalt-aggregate interactions -- Matching and/or modifying asphalt and aggregate properties to enhance bonding -- Test development -- Chemical composition and physical properties of asphalt used with absorptive aggregates -- Appendices -- References.This report reviews the research and key conclusions, presents the adhesion and stripping models, and presents an in-depth view of the research performed under the Strategic Highway Research Program A-003B contract. The studies elucidated the chemistry and physics of the asphalt-aggregate bond. The principal areas of research included adhesion and absorption. The impact of water and aging on adhesion was also evaluated. The products developed include the following: models of adhesion and stripping; net adsorption test; specialty tests that address specific problems involving asphalt-aggregate interactions such as the limestone reactivity test; and more complete understanding of absorption and the optimization of the Rice method.Performed under contract no.
