It implies moody, atmospheric work; veiled, half-lit images; fleeting glimpses of a captured moment. And, it's an insult. Or at least, that's how it started ... This is the music of a specific place and time--France, in the late 19th century. It was a time when Monet's paintings, with their subtle play on light and shadow, left some critics scratching their heards. "Vague impressionism" was the sarcastic response of at least one noted writer, and the term stuck. But what is Impressionist music? That's hard to capture in words. This music does not attempt to detail or describe--it's content merely to suggest, or to hint. By now, countless painters, poets, writers and musicians have taken the hint. Classical, jazz, and even electronic music all have their Impressionists. -- page [2] of program notes, John Schaefer, writer.
