An investigation of the accuracy of ortho-rater perimeter measurements / by Allen, John A.(CARDINAL)177047; Wood, Robert K.(CARDINAL)494117; Wright, James F.(CARDINAL)622301; University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.Highway Safety Research Center.;
Includes bibliographical references (leaf 11)."This study was designed to assess the precision of the Bausch and Lomb Ortho-Rater perimeter in determining the lateral visual fields of individuals. Twenty-two college students with uncorrected vision were examined on both an Ortho-Rater perimeter and a more sensitive clinical perimeter. An examination of lateral visual field (LVF) values and total visual field (TVF) measurements indicated that 1) LVF values and TVF values may be generally lower (narrower) on the Ortho-Rater than those obtained on a device such as might be found in a clinical setting and 2) Ortho-Rater LVF measurements for right and left eyes may not detect actual (i.e., existing) LVF differences between eyes"--Abstract.

Brilliant green [sound recording] : the surprising history and science of plant intelligence / by Mancuso, Stefano,author.(CARDINAL)424534; Viola, Alessandra,author.(CARDINAL)620858; Pollan, Michael,writer of foreword.(CARDINAL)265841; Chamberlain, Mike,narrator.(CARDINAL)552733;
Read by Mike Chamberlain.Are plants intelligent' Can they solve problems, communicate, and navigate their surroundings' Or are they passive, incapable of independent action or social behavior' Philosophers and scientists have pondered these questions since ancient Greece, most often concluding that plants are unthinking and inert: they are too silent, too sedentary-just too different from us. Yet discoveries over the past fifty years have challenged these ideas, shedding new light on the extraordinary capabilities and complex interior lives of plants.In Brilliant Green, Stefano Mancuso, a leading scientist and founder of the field of plant neurobiology, presents a new paradigm in our understanding of the vegetal world. Combining a historical perspective with the latest in plant science, Mancuso argues that, due to cultural prejudices and human arrogance, we continue to underestimate plants. In fact, they process information, sleep, remember, and signal to one another-showing that, far from passive machines, plants are intelligent and aware. Through a survey of plant capabilities from sight and touch to communication, Mancuso challenges our notion of intelligence, presenting a vision of plant life that is more sophisticated than most imagine.

Nineteenth-century art : from Romanticism to Art Nouveau ; The Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore / by Johnston, William R.,author.(CARDINAL)168824; Walters Art Gallery (Baltimore, Md.)(CARDINAL)139587;
Introduction: The Nineteenth-Century Collection at the Walters Art Gallery -- Neoclassicism and Romanticism -- Perceptions of Nature -- Social Realism and Genre Painting -- The Academic Tradition -- Historicism -- Orientalism and Exoticism -- Modern Life -- The Impressionists and the Avant-Garde -- The End of the Century."The nineteenth-century holdings of the Walters Art Gallery are unique amongst museum art collections from this period. This new title presents the highlights from this collection. These include a series of paintings by the foremost masters of the Romantic era, J.A.D. Ingres and Eugene Delacroix, as well as landscapes by painters associated with the Barbizon school. Likewise, the "transportation" series of watercolors that William Walters bought from Honore Daumier in 1864 is generally recognized as the highpoint of nineteenth-century Realism. However, it is in the field of academic art, which dominated French art during the Second Empire (1852-70), that The Walters excels. The conflicts between the academic painters - especially Jean-Leon Gerome and Alexandre Cabanel - and the impressionists are demonstrated by the museum's collection. The author presents the work of Edouard Manet in close proximity to that of his teacher, Thomas Couture, and the landscapes of Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley are juxtaposed with a highly idealized, poetic vision of Egypt by Charles Gleyre, with whom they trained."

JFK and the unspeakable : why he died and why it matters / by Douglass, James W.(CARDINAL)730722;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 392-488) and index.Introduction -- Chronology -- A Cold warrior turns -- Kennedy, Castro, and the CIA -- JFK and Vietnam -- Marked out for assassination -- Saigon and Chicago -- Washington and Dallas -- Appendix. Commencement address at American University (June 10, 1963) by President John F. Kennedy."In this book James Douglass presents a compelling account of why President John F. Kennedy was assassinated and why the unmasking of this truth remains crucial for the future of our country and the world." "Drawing on a vast field of investigation, including many sources available only in recent years, Douglass lays out a sequence of steps by JFK that transformed him, over the course of three years, from a traditional Cold Warrior to someone determined to pull the world back from the edge of apocalypse. Beginning with the fiasco of the Bay of Pigs Invasion (which left him wishing to "splinter the CIA in a thousand pieces"), followed by the Cuban Missile Crisis and his secret back-channel dialogue with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, JFK pursued a series of actions - right up to the week of his death - that caused members of his own U.S. military-intelligence establishment to regard him as a virtual traitor who had to be eliminated." "Far from being ancient history, the story of Kennedy's turn toward peace, and the price this exacted, bears crucial lessons for today. Those who plotted his death were determined not simply to eliminate one man but to kill a vision. Only by unmasking these forces of the "Unspeakable," Douglass argues, can we free ourselves and our country to pursue that vision of peace."--BOOK JACKET.
