- Emerald labyrinth : a scientist's adventures in the jungles of the Congo / by Greenbaum, Eli,1974-author.(CARDINAL)471450;
Includes bibliographical references and index.No joy in the brilliance of sunshine -- King Kong of Kahuzi Volcano -- The wrong place at the wrong time -- The rats of Miki -- A vampire in Virunga -- Wandege's eye -- The murderer of Mugegema -- Congolization -- This man is not right in the head -- Frogs in elephant footprints -- The death of Asukulu."Emerald Labyrinth is a scientist and adventurer's chronicle of years exploring the rainforests of sub-Saharan Africa. The richly varied habitats of the Democratic Republic of the Congo offer a wealth of animal, plant, chemical, and medical discoveries. But the country also has a deeply troubled colonial past and a complicated political present. Author Eli Greenbaum is a leading expert in sub-Saharan herpetology--snakes, lizards, and frogs--who brings a sense of wonder to the question of how science works in the twenty-first century. Along the way he comes face to face with spitting cobras, silverback mountain gorillas, wild elephants, and the teenaged armies of AK-47-toting fighters engaged in the continent's longest-running war. As a bellwether of the climate and biodiversity crises now facing the planet, the Congo holds the key to our planet's future. Writing in the tradition of books like The Lost City of Z, Greenbaum seeks out the creatures struggling to survive in a war-torn, environmentally threatened country. Emerald Labyrinth is an extraordinary book about the enormous challenges and hard-won satisfactions of doing science in one of the least known, least hospitable places on earth."--Amazon.com.

- Zwicky : the outcast genius who unmasked the universe / by Johnson, John,1947-author.(CARDINAL)385379;
"Fritz Zwicky was one of the most inventive and iconoclastic scientists of the twentieth century. He predicted the existence of neutron stars, and his research pointed the way toward the discovery of pulsars and black holes. He was the first to conceive of the existence of dark matter, the first to make a detailed catalog of thousands of galaxies, and the first to correctly suggest that cosmic rays originate from supernovas. Not content to confine his discoveries to the heavens, Zwicky contributed to the US war against Japan with inventions in jet propulsion that enabled aircraft to launch from carriers in the Pacific. After the war, he was the first Western scientist to interview Wernher von Braun, the Nazi engineer who developed the V-2 rocket. Later he became an outspoken advocate for space exploration, but also tangled with almost every leading scientist of the time, from Edwin Hubble and Richard Feynman to J. Robert Oppenheimer and Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar. In Zwicky, John Johnson Jr. brings this tempestuous maverick to life. Zwicky not only made groundbreaking contributions to science and engineering; he rose to fame as one of the most imaginative science popularizers of his day. Yet he became a pariah in the scientific community, denouncing his enemies, real and imagined, as "spherical bastards" and "horses' asses." Largely forgotten today, Zwicky deserves to be remembered for introducing the world to some of the most destructive forces in the universe, and as a reminder that genius obeys no rules and has no friends."--Page [2] of cover.Includes bibliographical references and index.Noted young men of science -- Glarus thrust -- On the trail of Zwicky's ghost: the bones of the earth -- The bigger and better elephant -- Quantum steak and matrix salad -- The expanding universe and tired light -- On the trail of Zwicky's ghost: the skeleton of the universe -- New alliances, new physics -- Tilting at windmills -- Rocket man -- Home fires -- Secret missions, finding Von Braun -- The march into space -- Bridges in space -- Domestic life -- On the trail of Zwicky's ghost: did dark matter rattle its chains? -- McCarthy and Sputnik -- Blue stars and quasars -- Banishment: even the old lion must roar -- Young America going to pot -- Magnificent desolation -- On the trail of Zwicky's ghost: mystery unsolved -- A scientific individual.

- Sorry! : The English and their manners / by Hitchings, Henry,1974-(CARDINAL)472253;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 353-378) and index.The stars' tennis balls : or, A short introduction from an unusual angle --"I'ma get medieval on yo ass' : manners in the age of chivalry -- Lubricants and filters : 'a kind of lesser morality' -- Godspeed, babe : or, Meetings and greetings -- Of courtiers and codpieces : fashioning Renaissance identity -- But who was the Renaissance man? -- Table manners : or, How to eat a cobra's heart -- The Clothes Show : 'When in doubt, opt for navy' -- Mr Sex -- Not Mr Sex : when 'coffee' doesn't mean coffee -- The elephant and the bad baby : the everyday language of manners -- Spectators and stratagems : the polite, commercial eighteenth century -- Lord Chesterfield and the invention of etiquette -- Letters and social change : Jane Austen and Fanny Burney -- The Englishness of English manners -- Island Man and his discontents : 'They do things differently there' -- Fanny Trollope and the domestic manners of Americans -- 'You're the most important person!' : the trouble with children -- What were Victorian values? -- Curb your enthusiasm : new ways for new times -- Creative hubs and 'extreme phenomena' : negotiating the modern city -- Location, location, location : the rules of place -- A fluid world : or, 'Are you suggesting that I should call you Eric?' -- Technology and the revenge effect -- 'Are we there yet?' : manners now.Journalist and theater critic Hitchings (The Language Wars) takes up the curious study of proper English behavior in his latest book. Manners matter to the English, yet the Daily Mail reported a study in 2008 "claiming that bad manners were the biggest problem facing society." Part social history, part cultural critique, the book moves humorously from the ancient to the modern with pithy anecdotes and amusing factoids. In the medieval court of Henry II, "One shouldn't attack an enemy while he is defecating, should avoid sharing secrets with one's wife, and ought to look towards the ceiling when belching." As the author notes, "people have been talking about modern manners' since the 18th century, " and the discussion continues. The tour of manners encompasses living conditions, language, social structures, innovations, and philosophy throughout centuries. This is not a book of etiquette instruction, but deconstruction.
