A new world imagined : art of the Americas / by Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.(CARDINAL)141870; Davis, Elliot Bostwick.(CARDINAL)267110; Wissman, Fronia E.(CARDINAL)204552; Polizzotti, Mark.(CARDINAL)305634; Usui, Emiko K.(CARDINAL)305633;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 347-350) and index.A New World Imagined -- Native Peoples of the Americas. -- Ancient cultures, modern connections ; The Americas' first art ; Native North American art -- Europe and the Americas. -- Transatlantic passages ; The classical tradition ; England ; France ; Italy ; Germany ; Spain ; The Netherlands and Scandinavia -- Africa, the Near East, Asia, and the Americas. -- Artistic influences of the non-Western world ; Africa ; The Near East ; Asia.This work proposes a bold new look at the art of the Americas by viewing it through its intersections and relationships with the world at large. Taking the vast geography and staggering cultural diversity of the North and South American continents as its starting point, the book introduces the ways in which American art, broadly defined, has been shaped both by its encounters with cultures around the globe and by its own past, from the ancient and native populations that first inhabited these territories to the European, Asian, Scandinavian and Latino emigres who settled here. But beyond actual immigration, foreign cultures, especially the strikingly different cultures of Asia and the Islamic world, have also impacted our own in purely imaginary ways, as American artists projected their fantasies and preconceptions on these far off lands and "imported" their motifs, infusing their work with a rich, wholly invented and thoroughly American vision of the "other." Discussing over 200 artworks, from incense burners and painted drinking vessels to some of this country's most celebrated paintings and sculptures, and coinciding with the opening of MFA Boston's new Art of the Americas wing, this work offers an alternate history of the Americas through the diverse inspirations and interactions through which its art has been fashioned. -- From book jacket.

Jones -- A Place in the World of Art: Cassatt, Degas, and American Collectors / Erica E. Hirshler and Elliot Bostwick Davis."This surprising study examines the extent to which Mary Cassatt influenced the work of her contemporary Edgar Degas. Edgar Degas's influence upon Mary Cassatt has long been acknowledged, but her role in shaping his artistic production and in preparing the way for his warm reception in America is fully examined for the first time. These two major figures of the impressionist movement shared a keen observer's eye, as well as an openness to experimentation. Despite differences of gender and nationality, they built a deep friendship based on mutual respect and admiration for each other's talents. Focusing on the critical period from the late 1870s through the mid-1880s, when Degas and Cassatt were most closely allied, this book brings together some seventy works in a variety of media to examine the fascinating artistic dialogue that developed between these two celebrated artists. Technical analysis provides new insight into the intersections between their art in terms of choice of media and methods as well as subject matter. The authors also examine the artists' participation in the unrealized collaborative impressionist publication Le Jour et la nuit, which resulted in some of their most exceptional prints. Another focus is a series of prints, pastels, and paintings produced by Degas on the theme of Mary Cassatt at the Louvre. A number of works exchanged between the two artists serve as a tangible testament to the affinity between Degas and Cassatt and show both artists as collectors and champions of each other's art."--Publisher description.
