In these accounts of Pope Francis's morning homilies from the first five months of his papacy, it is now possible, for those who were not present, to experience and enjoy his lively manner of spaeking, and his capacity to engage his listeners and their daily lives.

Pensées and other writings / by Pascal, Blaise,1623-1662.(CARDINAL)144399; Levi, Honor,translator.(CARDINAL)386305; Levi, Anthony,writer of introduction.(CARDINAL)683164; Pascal, Blaise,1623-1662.Pensées.English.(CARDINAL)743696;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 227-247) and index.Pensées -- Discussion with Monsieur De Sacy -- The Art of Persuasion -- Writing on Grace: Letter on the Possibility of the Commandments Treatise concerning Predestination.For much of his life, Pascal (1623-62) worked on a magnum opus which was never published in the form the philosopher intended. Instead, Pascal left a mass of fragments, some of them meant as notes for the Apologie. These became known as the Pensées, and they occupy a crucial place in Western philosophy and religious writing. This translation is the only one based on the Pensées as Pascal left them. It includes the principal dossiers classified by Pascal, as well as the essential portion of the important Writings on Grace. A detailed thematic index gives access to Pascal's areas of concern, while the selection of texts and the introduction help to show why Pascal changed the plan of his projected work before abandoning the book he might have written.

Yet historically, artistic images have played a profound role in American religious life. This superb collection of essays, with its unique assembly of images, challenges the apparent tension between religion and the arts by illustrating and investigating their long-standing and intriguing relationship from the early nineteenth century to the present day. The essays explore such varied topics as Sioux Sun Dance artifacts and paintings, American Jewish New Year postcards, the New Mexican santos tradition, roadside shrines, images of journey in African American pictorial traditions, the public display of religion, and the religious use of nineteenth-century technologies of mass reproduction"--Publisher description.

Unparalleled in scope, it covers pre-Columbian times to the present, from the extraordinary power and influence of the Roman Catholic Church to Mexico's uneven postrevolutionary modernization, from chronic economic and political instability to its rich cultural heritage. Bringing together over eighty selections that include poetry, folklore, photoessays, songs, political cartoons, memoirs, journalism, and scholarly writing, this volume highlights the voices of everyday Mexicans-indigenous peoples, artists, soldiers, priests, peasants, and workers. It also includes pieces by politicians and foreign diplomats, literary giants Octavio Paz, Gloria Anzaldúa, and Carlos Fuentes, and pieces about and by revolutionary leaders Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata. This revised and updated edition features new selections that address twenty-first century developments, including the rise of narcopolitics, the economic and personal costs of the United States' mass deportation programs, the political activism of indigenous healers and manufacturing workers, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mexico Reader is an essential resource for travelers, students, and experts alike"--
