Her life, like most in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her mother Erica, a former ballerina who exerts a suffocating control over her. When artistic director Thomas Leroy decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: new dancer Lily, who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side - a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.MPAA rating: Rated R for strong sexual content, disturbing violent images, language and some drug use; Canadian Home Video Rating: 14A.DVD; region 1; NTSC; 5.1 Dolby digital surround, 2.0 Dolby surround; widescreen (2.40:1) presentation.Academy Awards, 2011: Best actress.Australian Film Institute, 2011: Movie of the Year.British Academy of Film and Television Arts, 2011: Film awards, Best actress in a lead role (Portman).Golden Globe Awards, 2011: Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama.

Over the past two decades, Baghramian has become known for her reflections on minimalism and her contextual approaches to exhibition via sculpture and site-responsive installations. Her work marks boundaries, transitions, and gaps in the museum space and the urban space, referencing interior and exterior, fashion and design, theatre and dance, form and meaning, and context and discourse. This lavishly illustrated overview of the work of Nairy Baghramian includes illuminating texts that explore the sculptor's creative process."--Provided by publisher.

Los Angeles to New York : Dwan Gallery, 1959-1971 / by Dwan, Virginia,author.(CARDINAL)354833; Rozanski, Paige,author.(CARDINAL)354832; Meyer, James Sampson,1962-Art gallery in an era of mobility.; National Gallery of Art (U.S.),issuing body.(CARDINAL)141262; University of Chicago.Press,issuing body.(CARDINAL)153865;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 392-396) and index.Virginia Dwan, founder of leading avant-garde galleries in Los Angeles and New York between 1959 and 1971, was a major force in an art world made increasingly mobile by commercial jets and the interstate highway system. New York artists Franz Kline, Philip Guston, Ad Reinhardt, Robert Rauschenberg, and Claes Oldenburg, along with the Los Angeles-based Edward Kienholz, were among those who had shows in Dwan's Westwood gallery. A keen follower of the Parisian art scene, Dwan also gave Yves Klein and Martial Raysse their American debuts. Her 1962 group show My Country 'Tis of Thee is among the earliest exhibitions of pop art. Dwan supported artists who challenged the limits of art's status as both object and commodity and who eventually developed an art sited outside the gallery in remote locations in the American West. If the Los Angeles gallery featured abstract expressionism, neo-Dada, and pop, the New York branch broke ground with brilliant presentations of minimalism (10, 1966), conceptual art (Language II-IV, 1968-1970), and land art featuring the work of Carl Andre, Sol LeWitt, Robert Morris, and others (Earthworks, 1968). Dwan sponsored iconic earthworks such as Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty, Michael Heizer's Double Negative, Walter De Maria's 35-Pole Lightning Field, and Charles Ross's Star Axis. This is the storied history of the Dwan Gallery told by an astute scholar of modern art, the gallerist herself, and a meticulous researcher.
