Includes bibliographical references."The philosopher, statesman, and moralist Plutarch of Chaeronia (first and early second centuries CE) begins his essay Political Advice, wherein he advises a man about how to embark upon a career in government and how to become an effective leader by saying: 'First of all, let the primary motivation for political activity be a conscious choice based on judgment and reason, which serves as a firm and strong foundation, and let the choice not be rashly inspired by the vain pursuit of glory, a sense of rivalry, or a lack of other meaningful activities.' In How to Lead, classicist Jeffrey Beneker translates three of Plutarch's political essays: To an Uneducated Leader, Political Advice, and The Role of the Elder Statesman. In these essays Plutarch seeks not only to advise these budding, practicing, and even aging politicians about the problems of governing their Greek cities under Roman rule, but also to educate them about general principles of leadership. Plutarch thought quite a lot about political leadership. The management of public affairs at all levels is one of the most important of human endeavors. It requires education, character, and commitment. He encourages those who desire to lead, and he gives advice based mainly on the experiences of great leaders of the past. These essays are timeless reflections on the proper way to lead and serve, publicly, at least with respect to the European and American political traditions. The essays emphasize the importance of personal integrity and friendships, how best to persuade one's fellow citizens, the dangers inherent in rivalry, and that the successful management of public affairs demands respect for the state's institutions, cooperation among politicians, and the subordination of one's own glory to the welfare of the state"--Notes on the translation and Greek text -- To an uneducated leader -- How to be a good leader -- Should an old man engage in politics? -- Important persons and terms.

Performed by Rosalyn Landor.Sir Richard Kenworthy has less than a month to find a bride. He knows he can't be too picky, but when he sees Iris Smythe-Smith hiding behind her cello at her family's infamous musicale, he thinks he might have struck gold. She's the type of girl you don't notice until the second or third look, but there's something about her--something simmering under the surface--and he knows she's the one. Iris Smythe-Smith is used to being underestimated. With her pale hair and quiet, sly wit, she tends to blend into the background. So when Richard Kenworthy demands an introduction, she is suspicious. He flirts, he charms, and he gives every impression of a man falling in love, but she can't quite believe it's all true. When his proposal of marriage turns into a compromising position that forces the issue, she can't help thinking that he's hiding something...even as her heart tells her to say yes.Issued on Playaway, a dedicated audio media player.

Process innovation : reengineering work through information technology / by Davenport, Thomas H.,1954-(CARDINAL)206108;
Includes bibliographical references and index.The nature of process innovation -- Selecting processes for innovation -- Information technology as an enabler of process innovation -- Processes and information -- Organizational and human resource enablers of process change -- Creating a process vision -- Understanding and improving existing processes --Designing and implementing the new process and organization -- Process innovation and the management of organizational change -- Implementing process innovation with information technology -- Product and service development and delivery processes -- Customer-facing processes -- Management processes -- Summary and conclusions -- Appendix A: Companies involved in the research -- Appendix B: The origins of process innovation.Process innovation - a revolutionary new approach that fuses information technology and human resource management - can dramatically improve business performance. In the demanding environment of the 1990s, simply formulating strategy is no longer sufficient; it is also essential to design the processes to implement strategy effectively.Built around new technologies and motivated workers, process innovation begins with a commitment to a strategic vision from senior management. Its scope is vast and crosses multiple business functions. Its goals are ambitious - companies embarking on process innovation often seek tenfold improvements in cost, time, or quality. For example, IBM reduced the preparation time for quotes on buying or leasing a computer from seven days to one, while preparing 10 times as many quotes. The Internal Revenue Service collected 33% more from delinquent taxpayers, with only half the staff and one-third the branch offices. One analysis of the New York Stock Exchange suggests that a redesign of trading processes could save buyers and sellers hundreds of millions of dollars each year.The cornerstone to process innovation's dramatic results is information technology - a largely untapped resource, but a crucial "enabler" of process innovation. In turn, only a challenge like process innovation affords maximum use of information technology's potential. Thomas Davenport provides numerous examples of firms that have succeeded or failed in combining business change and technology initiatives. He also highlights the role of new organizational structures and human resource programs in facilitating this process.

A day in Pixar: Spend a day at Pixar Studies and get to know the president of the studio, animators and supervisors of this innovation machine that has already released 12 movies and received more than $6 billion at the box-office. Hear the stories and learn what it takes to work for one of the world's most successful studios.Energy, biofuels from plants & algae: Our society has increasing demands for energy and fuel, so scientists are constantly working to increase the reliability and performance of renewable energy technology. A small percentage of renewable energy is created with biofuels. Common examples are ethanol and biodiesel. Ethanol is made from fermenting biomass, such as grasses, wood chips, poplar trees and select agricultural waste. Fermentation is the breakdown of sugar producing alcohol and carbon dioxide. This is the same process that yeasts and bacteria perform in making bread, beer, wine, and some cultured foods. Micro-algae are single-cell, photosynthetic organisms known for their rapid growth and high energy content, and are becoming an increasingly viable source in the production of liquid transportation biofuels. Using the sun's energy, these microorganisms combine carbon dioxide with water, creating biomass more efficiently and rapidly than terrestrial plants. Oil-rich micro-algae strains are capable of producing the feedstock for a number of transportation fuels (biodiesel, "green" diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel) while mitigating the effects of carbon dioxide released from sources such as power plants. This program investigates new technologies at algae facilites, and explains the processes behind their cutting-edge micro-algae to fuel processes.Engineering: prosthetic innovations: Scientists and engineers have made great strides in recent years with prosthetics and orthotics. In this program we discuss how designers simulate the anatomy and physiology of missing limbs. Though some prosthetics are simple and minimally functional, others are complex bionic artificial limbs with improved designs, using advanced hydraulics, lightweight materials such as carbon fiber and computer microprocessors and sensors. This program will highlight how advances in prosthetics have improved life for people with certain injuries and disabilities.Meteorology, studying severe weather: Extreme weather events can cause widespread damage resulting in billions of dollars of losses. Recent events, such as blizzards, hurricanes, and droughts have been exceptionally devastating as a result of several environmental factors. The convergence of several weather systems and the right atmospheric conditions sometimes result in the "perfect storm." This issue examines the factors behind catastrophic weather. It explains El Nino and La Nina, which are instigators of many unusual climactic events around the globe. These phenomena impact ocean temperatures, wind patterns and other atmospheric conditions. Other intense storms, such as Hurricane Sandy, result from the interaction of low pressure systems, which affect the direction and strength of the storm.Technology - Engineering: Dummy & Robot Heroes: The Wonders of Technology, Genetic Engineering, Biotechnology Science series covers subjects from Robots, Transportation, Agricultural Science, Science in the Third World, Making Plants Grow Plastic & New Miracles from Science. Students will develop a basic understanding of the fundamentals of Technology and work their way up to more complex subjects. As human stand-ins, dummies and their mobile counterparts, robots have been sparing us risk to life and limb and saving our lives for decades. Perhaps the best known examples of these are crash test dummies, which have allowed automotive engineers to analyze what happens to the human body in collisions. The information obtained in these tests has helped them design safety advances like seat belts, child car seats, air bags and cars that absorb the greater energy of a crash impact. This program shows the growing sophistication of dummies and robots as well as their use in many fields of product and safety testing, disaster and rescue training, manufacturing and hazardous materials handling. Includes suggestions for careers in this field of study.Understanding clouds, meteorological wonders: Meteorologists studying the microphysical processes of clouds are learning more about what occurs naturally inside clouds. By increasing fundamental knowledge of complex cloud structure and the chemical and electrical mechanisms that trigger changes, weather and climate forecast models improve. Scientists and geophysicists are utilizing the newest technology to explore known and speculative information about cloud structures and mechanisms.Ages 10+.Grades 5+.

Great books of the Western world. by Dostoyevsky, Fyodor,1821-1881.Bratʹi͡a Karamazovy.English.(CARDINAL)726911; Ibsen, Henrik,1828-1906.Plays.Selections.English.(CARDINAL)519536; Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc.(CARDINAL)147481;
The brothers karamazov / Fyodor Dostoevsky ; translated by Constance Garnett -- A doll's house /Henrik Ibsen ; translated by James W. McFarlane -- The wild duck / Henrik Ibsen ; translated by James W. McFarlane -- Hedda Gabler / Henrik Ibsen ; translated by Jens Arup -- The master builder / Henrik Ibsen ; translated by James W. McFarlane.A Doll's House. Norwegian-born Henrik Ibsen's classic play about the struggle between independence and security still resonates with readers and audience members today. Often hailed as an early feminist work, the story of Nora and Torvald rises above simple gender issues to ask the bigger question: To what extent have we sacrificed our selves for the sake of social customs and to protect what we think is love? Nora's struggle and ultimate realizations about her life invite all of us to examine our own lives and find the many ways we have made ourselves dolls and playthings in the hands of forces we believe to be beyond our control.Edda Gabler. Drama in four acts by Henrik Ibsen, published in 1890 and produced the following year. The work reveals Hedda Gabler as a selfish, cynical woman bored by her marriage to the scholar Jorgen Tesman. Her father's pair of pistols provide intermittent diversion, as do the attentions of the ne'er-do-well Judge Brack. When Thea Elvestad, a longtime acquaintance of Hedda's, reveals that she has left her husband for the writer Ejlert Lovborg, who once pursued Hedda, the latter becomes vengeful. Learning that Ejlert has forsworn liquor, Hedda first steers him to a rowdy gathering at Brack's and subsequently burns the reputedly brilliant manuscript that he loses there while drunk. Witnessing his desperation, she sends him one of the pistols and he shoots himself. Brack deduces Hedda's complicity and demands that she become his mistress in exchange for his silence about the matter. Instead, she ends her ennui with the remaining pistol. The work is remarkable for its nonjudgmental depiction of an immoral, destructive character, one of the most vividly realized women in dramatic literature.The Brothers Karamazov. The final novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, first published as Bratya Karamazovy in 1879-80, and generally considered to be his masterpiece. It is the story of Fyodor Karamazov and his sons Alyosha, Dmitry, and Ivan. It is also a story of patricide, into the sordid unfolding of which Dostoyevsky introduces a love-hate struggle with profound psychological and spiritual implications. Throughout the whole novel there persists a search for faith, for God--the central idea of the work. The dramatization of Ivan's repudiation of God is concentrated in the famous "Legend of the Grand Inquisitor." A response to Ivan is contained in the preaching of the monk Zosima that the secret of universal harmony is not achieved by the mind but by the heart.The Master Builder. Written in 1892, later in Ibsen's life, "The Master Builder," or "Bygmester Solness," is a 3-act play that explores the conflicted thoughts and feelings of the hardened and powerful artist Halvard Solness. He is an older architect who painstakingly worked his way to professional distinction at the cost of his personal life. As he reflects on his career, Halvard is frustrated with his ambition and dreams of achieving genuine satisfaction in his life. At the same time, he fears being surpassed by a younger generation of talent, including by his own son, a younger member of the firm. A symbolic and semi-autobiographical play, "The Master Builder" portrays a creative man's confusion and downfall.The Wild Duck. Drama in five acts by Henrik Ibsen, published in 1884 as Vildanden and produced the following year. In the play, an idealistic outsider's gratuitous truth-telling destroys a family. Gregers Werle, who has a compulsion to tell the truth at all costs, reveals to the Ekdal family certain unasked-for information about each family member's past. The knowledge destroys their illusions and their family life. As the final destructive act Hedvig, the Ekdals' adolescent daughter, kills herself after Werle informs the family that she may be the illegitimate daughter of a man other than her beloved father.
