- Present tense : a Radiohead compendium / by Hoskyns, BarneyEditor(DLC)n 91083411;
'Present Tense is an anthology to savour . . . giving you as sharp a portrait of this unknowable band as you could hope for . . . Radiohead fans will love it' Classic Rock A Rock's Backpages anthology of Radiohead, the most radical and fascinating rock band in modern music history, edited and introduced by Barney Hoskyns. For over 25 years, Radiohead have been the most radical and fascinating rock band in the world. Fearless in their desire to change and shape-shift, the Oxfordshire quintet has - through the nine studio albums from 1993's Pablo Honey to 2016's A Moon-Shaped Pool - consistently stretched the boundaries of what 'rock' means and does. Anchored in Thom Yorke's soaring voice and elliptical lyrics, and in the compositional genius of guitarist/keyboardist Jonny Greenwood, Radiohead continue to astonish as they approach their fourth decade. Present Tense collects the best writing on this most literate of pop groups, from the earliest local reports about On A Friday - Radiohead's first moniker - through the inspired commentary of Mark Greif and Simon Reynolds to the trenchant profiles of Will Self, John Harris and others. It's an anthology that goes a long way towards explaining what Rock's Backpages editor Barney Hoskyns describes as the band's 'seriousness, emotional grandeur and willingness to stare humanity's dystopian hi-tech future in the face'.

Ferber -- A radical legacy: the British Pre-Raphaelites and global Pre-Raphaelitism / Tim Barringer -- Abolitionism and the American Pre-Raphaelite experiment / Sophie Lynford -- Thought on canvas: American Pre-Raphaelite iconography / Barbara Dayer-Gallati -- A knowing look: the American Pre-Raphaelite still life / Mark K. Mitchell -- "The Perfect Observance of Truth": photography and American Pre-Raphaelitism / Diane Waggoner -- The new path 1863-1865: "He Serves All, Who Dares to Be True" / Janice Simon -- Plates -- Checklist of the exhibition -- Association for the Advancement of Truth in Art: timeline (1863-1865).Bringing together insights from a distinguished group of scholars, The American Pre-Raphaelites: Radical Realists examines the history and legacy of this often-overlooked group of American artists who were profoundly influenced by John Ruskin (1819-1900), the most influential art critic of the Victorian era, and his call for a revolutionary change in the practice of art--to leave tradition behind, exit the studio, work outdoors, and reproduce nature's "truth" with exacting detail. Published in celebration of Ruskin's two-hundredth birthday, The American Pre-Raphaelites includes some eighty works by Thomas Charles Farrer, Fidelia Bridges, Charles Herbert Moore, Henry Roderick Newman, and William Trost Richards, among others. New research reveals that many of these artists sought reform not only in the practice of art, but also in the broader political arena--many were abolitionists, and Farrer himself had served in the Union army. They followed Ruskin's dictum to record the natural world with strict fidelity, but they also created works of stunning beauty that often include a rich political subtext.--Provided by publisher.

- Constable oil sketches / by Constable, John,1776-1837.(CARDINAL)149648; Baskett, John.(CARDINAL)154328;
Bibliography: pages 17-18.The landscapes of John Constable, like those of his controversial contemporary, J. M. W. Turner, spearheaded the revolution that became impressionism. Discovering this great Britch precursor of modern painting, Monet and his fellow impressionists were stunned by the freshness of Constable's color, the naturalism of his life and atmosphere, the boldness of his brushwork, the feeling that his landscapes were painted on the spot, in an era when landscapes were normally painted in the studio in somber, indoor colors. Constable was, in fact, one of the first artists to paint outdoors. Although his large salon pieces were normally painted in the studio, their revolutionary “truth to nature” was based on small oils painted in the field. In these oil sketches, rarely seen in his own day, the artist conducted his most radical experiments with light and color. Thus, it is these small, spontaneous works -- rather than the larger, more finished canvases - which many modern artists and critics consider Constable's greatest achievements. This beautiful book reproduces thirty-two of constables finest oil sketches, all in full color, printed in the Netherlands by offset lithography. Each painting has been specially photographed for the book and the plates are unique in their fidelity to the originals. John Baskett's authoritative text describes the close relationship between the sketches and the development of Constable's work, and analyzes each color plate. -- Publisher (inside flaptext)

John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Mike Douglas, Bobby Seale, Ralph Nader, George Carlin, Jerry Rubin.For one extraordinary week in February 1972, the Revolution WAS televised! Daytime Revolution takes us back in time to the week when John Lennon and Yoko Ono took over a Philadelphia broadcasting studio and co-hosted the iconic Mike Douglas Show, at that time a top-rated show reaching a daily audience of 40 million viewers. What followed was five unforgettable episodes of television, with Lennon and Ono at the helm and Mike Douglas bravely keeping the show on track. Acting as producers and hosts, Lennon and Ono handpicked their controversial guests, including Yippie founder Jerry Rubin, Black Panther Chairman Bobby Seale, as well as political activist Ralph Nader and comic truth teller George Carlin. Their version of daytime TV was a radical take on the traditional format, incorporating candid Q&A sessions with their rapt audience, conversations about radical politics, conceptual art events, John₂s very candid reminiscences about his life with Yoko and The Beatles, and one-of-a-kind musical performances, including a unique duet with Lennon and Chuck Berry and a poignant rendition of Lennon₂s ₃Imagine.₄ A document of the past that also speaks to our turbulent present, Daytime Revolution captures the power that art can have when it reaches out to communicate and the bravery of two artists who never took the easy way out as they fought for their vision of a better world.Closed captioning in English.DVD, wide screen.
