- Women make horror : filmmaking, feminism, genre / by Peirse, Alison,editor.;
"Women Make Horror is the first book-length study of women filmmakers in horror film, the first all-women edited book on horror film, and the first book to call out the male-bias in written histories of horror and then to illuminate precisely how, and where, these histories are lacking. It re-evaluates existing literature on the history of horror film, on women practitioners in the film industry and approaches to undertaking film industries research. It establishes new approaches for studying women practitioners and illuminates their unexamined contribution to the formation and evolution of the horror genre. The book focuses on women directors and screenwriters but also acknowledges the importance of women producers, editors and cinematographers. It explores narrative and experimental cinema, short, anthology and feature-filmmaking, and offers case studies of North American, Latin American, European, East Asian and Australian filmmakers, films and festivals. With this book we can transform how we think about women filmmakers and genre"--Includes bibliographical references and index.Women Make (Write, Produce, Direct, Shoot, Edit and Analyze) Horror / Alison Peirse -- Stephanie Rothman and Vampiric Film Histories / Alicia Kozma -- Inside Karen Arthur's The Mafu Cage / Alexandra Heller-Nicholas -- The Secret beyond the Door: Daria Nicolodi and Suspiria's Multiple Authorship / Martha Shearer -- Personal Trauma Cinema and the Experimental Videos of Cecelia Condit and Ellen Cantor / Katia Houde -- Self-Reflexivity and Feminist Camp in Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare / Tosha R. For Phil, the nasty, self-centered weather forecaster in "Groundhog Day," that hell reveals itself one morning in the Groundhog Capitol of the USA, Punxsutawney, Pa. He has journeyed there to do a remote broadcast about his namesake, the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, and wakes up the next morning in the same bed, with the radio playing the same song, and it gradually becomes clear to him that he is reliving precisely the same day. It will be Groundhog Day again tomorrow, too, and on the day after that. Finally, Phil begins to ponder the question "What would you do if you were stuck in one place, and everything that you did was the same, and nothing mattered?"MPAA Rating: Rated PG, for thematic elements; Canadian Home Video rating: PG.DVD; region 1; Dolby Digital 5.1 surround; anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) presentation.

- Antonioni, or, The Surface of the world / by Chatman, Seymour,1928-2015.(CARDINAL)713414;
Filmography: pages 265-270.Includes bibliographical references (pages 271-281) and index.Early films -- Il grido -- The great tetralogy : plots and themes -- The great tetralogy : characters -- The great tetralogy : settings and the environments -- The great tetralogy : cinematic form -- Il provine and Blow-up -- Zabriskie Point and Chung Kuo Cina -- The passenger and Il mistero di Oberwald -- Identificazione di una donne.Michelangelo Antonioni is one of the great visual artists of the cinema. The central and distinguishing strength of Antonioni's mature films, Seymour Chatman argues, is narration by a kind of visual minimalism, by an intense concentration on the sheer appearance of things and a rejection of explanatory dialogue. Though traditional audiences have balked at the "opacity" of Antonioni's films, it is precisely their rendered surface that is so eloquent once one learns to read it. Not despite, but through, their silences the films show a deep concern with the motives, perceptions and vicissitudes of the emotional life. This study covers films not dealt with in any other book on the great director, including Il mistero di Obertwald (1980) and Identificazione di una donna (1982), which have not yet been seen in the U.S. Its coverage of the early documentaries and features, when Antonioni was forging his new and original stylistic "language," is especially full. In a free-ranging analysis of the evolution of Antonioni's style that quotes liberally from Antonioni's own highly articulate writings and interviews, Chatman shows how difficult it was for the filmmaker to liberate his art from the conventional means of rendering narrative, especially dialogue, conventional sound effects, and commentative music. From his first efforts to his triumphant achievements in the tetralogy of L'avventura, L'eclisse, and Il deserto rosso, Antonioni's acute sensibility struggled to achieve the mastery that has won him a secure place in film history. Chatman's study is the only complete account of Antonioni's work available in English. Its novel visual approach to the films while attract not only film scholars but also readers interested in painting and architecture--both important elements of Antonioni's work.
