"Delegation' is the first comprehensive monograph by Aps̀alooke/Crow artist Wendy Red Star, whose photography recasts historical narratives with wit, candor, and a feminist, Indigenous perspective. Red Star centers Native American life and material culture through imaginative self-portraiture, vivid collages, archival interventions, and site-specific installations. Whether referencing nineteenth-century Crow leaders or 1980s pulp fiction, museum collections or family pictures, she constantly questions the role of the photographer in shaping Indigenous representation. Including a dynamic array of Red Star's lens-based works from 2006 to the present, and a range of essays, stories, and poems, Delegation is a spirited testament to an influential artist's singular vision. A stone bridge North : stories from a new life / by Maloy, Kate,1944-(CARDINAL)664447;
A middle-aged woman with a teenage son rediscovers her Quaker faith, and quits her urban life for a homestead in the woods of Vermont. . A Stone Bridge North is the author's own story of "miracles found and fears allayed" in the journey out of a confining urban existence and into a simpler, more joyous life. To tell this story fully, she must look through changed eyes at her past-at childhood anxieties, family disaffections, failed marriages, late motherhood, restless boredom, and, paradoxically, a native talent for joy. She learns that she has been guided by faith even when she thought she had none. She begins to discern purpose and design both in her stories and in the light by which she sees them-a light refracted through a Quaker lens that searches for the sacred in all people. As the four seasons turn, she celebrates the loves of her new life-family, friends, language, silence, and the extraordinary landscape of Vermont.

What are those signs? And in what ways are they significant? As a native Israeli, Amir Tsarfati has a perspective of prophecy and current events not commonly heard. A Jew who converted to Christianity, he is the founder and president of Behold Israel, a nonprofit ministry that provides news and information about Israel through the lens of biblical history and prophecy. From his vantage point at the epicenter of today's religious conflict as well as careful Bible study, Tsarfati points to Scripture passages that inform us the return of the Lord is imminent. In The Day Approaching, he lays out the signs described by Jesus Himself-and explains how they indicate His return of is nearer than ever. As you seek clarity about earth's final days, let the Bible alone be the one resource you turn to for answers"--

As was often the case, there were more ordinary people than soldiers in such perilous situations. Yet very little is known or reported about them. The purpose of this book is to delve into their choices, fears, and intentions while they experienced first-hand violence and utter chaos. Straying from the norm, "Hidden in Plain Sight" seeks to tell history, not from the dated pages of our history books, but from the lens of real people telling their stories." --

Building the worlds that kill us : disease, death and inequality in American history / by Rosner, David,1947-author.(CARDINAL)722507; Markowitz, Gerald E.,author.(CARDINAL)176060;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 303-372) and index."Building the Worlds that Kill Us traces the historical development of health as a "product" of industry, economic advance, globalization, and social inequality. Diseases of the past are emblematic of the changing physical, economic, and ideological realities of American culture at any moment. For example, the conventional wisdom holds that the classic infectious and communicable diseases of the nineteenth century-typhoid, cholera, smallpox, tuberculosis-were products of an urbanizing, industrializing society that jammed people into tenements, left them with outdoor plumbing, and polluted the water supply. But rather than products of an unavoidable physical environment created by an urbanizing, industrializing world, Rosner and Markowitz argue they are emblematic of American culture and its ideological and social values. How did these values determine that conditions for some could be sacrificed for the wealth of others? Inevitably, Americans were making social decision about who shall live and who shall die. Popular ideas of personal or community "worthiness"-who were the "truly" needy and who were "unworthy" or "undeserving"-shaped our ideas that disease was linked to morality, which in turn created institutions that served the wealthy and the poor, the immigrant and the native born American, the black and the white, indigenous populations and those of European backgrounds unequally. Health and disease are a lens through which to see our changing social order and the intellectual and physical landscape. From colonialism to industrialism, plastics to pollution, the authors chart the development of new diseases and occupational afflictions as they keep pace with an advancing America over four hundred years"--

Black earth : a journey through Russia after the fall / by Meier, Andrew.(CARDINAL)458866;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 451-495) and index."Andrew Meier stood witness to the tumultuous final years of the USSR. But when many other journalists had taken leave of this vexed and beguiling land, believing it drained of stories. Meier returned, covering Russia and the former Soviet states as a Moscow correspondent for Time magazine from 1996 to 2001. In all, Meier reported from the lands of the former Soviet Union longer than almost any other Western journalist." "Inspired by both Russophile American writers like Edmund Wilson and native geniuses like Anton Pavlovich Chekhov - both of whom had attempted to penetrate Russia's veils of secrecy and lore - Meier journeyed to the five corners of this resurgent and reputedly free land: newly rich Moscow, war-torn Chechnya, arctic Norilsk, haunted Sakhalin, and proudly crumbling St. Petersburg. Such a wide lens makes Black Earth perhaps the most insightful book on post-Soviet Russia written to date, one that captures its present limbo - a land rich in potential, yet its people ever fearful of staggering back into repression and tyranny."--Jacket.

South to America [sound recording] : a journey below the Mason-Dixon to understand the soul of a nation / by Perry, Imani,1972-author,narrator.(CARDINAL)356331;
Read by Imani Perry.Everyone thinks they know the South. Even those who have never lived there, who have never even been there, can rattle off a list of signifiers that define the South for them: Gone with the Wind, the Civil War, the Ku Klux Klan, cotillions, plantations, football, Jim Crow, and, of course, slavery. For those who live outside the region, the South is very much about the profound difference between ₁us₂ and ₁them.₂ Imani Perry shows in detail by infinitely careful detail that the meaning of American is inextricably linked with the South, and if we are American, we are all at least a little bit Southern. In looking at the American South through a historic, personal, and anecdotal lens, Perry argues that the South is the nation₂s heartland. The formation of our country, our wealth, and our politics have always pivoted around the resource-rich region. A native of Alabama but raised in the North, Perry returns to the South the place she has always called home traveling through its cities and their cultural formations, studying its historical figures and institutions and the natural settings from which they sprang. Seeing the South as familiar and anew, Perry goes on a journey that brings her in contact with Southerners from all walks of life. She renders them with sensitivity and honesty, in addition to sharing her thoughts about a troubling history and the ritual humiliations and joys that characterize so much of Southern life. This is the story of a woman going home a Black woman and a Southern home at a time when ideas of how the South should be are rising once again.

Resisting illegitimate authority : a thinking person's guide to being an anti-authoritarian -- strategies, tools, and models / by Levine, Bruce E.,1956-author.(CARDINAL)702783;

The Compliant, the Noncompliant, and the Anti-Authoritarian -- Part Two: The Assault on U.S. Anti-Authoritarians : 3. Great Contributions Do Not Prevent Marginalization -- 4. Political, Spiritual, Philosophical, and Psychological Lenses for Anti-Authoritarians -- 10. Lessons from Anti-Authoritarians Who Have Helped Themselves and the Cause -- 11. We Don't Need No Badges: Depression, Relationships, Mutual Aid, and Parenting -- Conclusion.The capacity to comply with abusive authority is humanity's "fatal flaw". Fortunately, within the human family there are anti-authoritarians -- people comfortable questioning the legitimacy of authority and resisting its illegitimate forms. However, as Resisting Illegitimate Authority reveals, these rebels are regularly scorned, shunned, financially punished, psychopathologized, criminalized, and even assassinated. Profiling a diverse group of U.S. anti-authoritarians -- from Thomas Paine to Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, Lenny Bruce, and Noam Chomsky -- in order to glean useful lessons from their lives, Resisting Illegitmate Authority provides political, spiritual, philosophical, and psychological tools to help those suffering violence and vilification in a society whose most ardent cheerleaders for "freedom" are often its most obedient and docile citizens. Discussing anti-authoritarian approaches to depression, relationships, and parenting, Levine makes it clear that far from being a disease, disobedience may be our last hope.

Sustainable genealogy : separating fact from fiction in family legends / by Hite, Richard W.,author.(CARDINAL)315386; Jones, Henry Z.,1940-writer of forward.(CARDINAL)144449;
Includes bibliographical references.There are a lot of textbooks that describe how to find your ancestors; this new one by Richard Hite clarifies how not to. In short, Sustainable Genealogy explains how to avoid the traps many family historians can fall into. Whether it's a proud family legend, a venerable publication or the claims of an Internet family tree, the unsubstantiated genealogical source is like a house of sticks before the Big Bad Wolf -- it won't stand up. As Mr. Hite demonstrates in this collection of case studies, many are the "oral traditions that have fallen by the wayside under the lens of careful research in primary sources and more recently, DNA testing."--Chapter 1. Recurring patterns in oral history -- Chapter 2. Ethnic origins of family names -- Chapter 3. Maiden names of female ancestors -- Chapter 4. Relationships to someone famous -- Chapter 5. Relationships to royalty, nobility, or wealth -- Chapter 6. Birthplaces of ancestors -- Chapter 7. Military service of ancestors -- Chapter 8. Two or more brothers as immigrants -- Chapter 9. Associations or encounters with famous people -- Chapter 10. Native American ancestors -- Chapter 11. How much misinformation can be crammed into one paragraph?
