Hip hop : portraits of an urban hymn /
Word, words, the word / Michael Eric Dyson -- Beyond the Phatitude: why hip hop exists / Gaye Theresa Johnson -- Interview / Frank H. Goodyear III and David Scheinbaum.Since its inception in the 1970s, hip hop music and the culture surrounding it has become a hugely influential and popular musical form in America and around the world. Its popularity extends beyond the urban centers where it was born, and pervades and influences youth culture around the globe. However, few artists have created serious and powerful photographs that explore the breadth of the phenomenon. With this volume, David Scheinbaum has done just that. His portraits of Erykah Badu, Chuck D., George Clinton, Common, Mos Def, Del-Tha Funkee Homosapien, Sage Francis, Professor Griff, KRS One, Mike Relm, Tajai, Wu-Tang Clan and Yelawolf (among others) approach hip hop as a positive cultural influence akin to the youth movement of the 1960s. Scheinbaum's photographs are accompanied by essays by Gaye Theresa Johnson and Michael Eric Dyson, an artist conversation with Frank H. Goodyear III and an introduction by Brian Hardgroove of Public Enemy.

Motor City / by J Dilla,1974-2006,composer,performer.;
Performed by J Dilla ; with additional musicians."Wrapped in a mock mailing envelope, Motor City adds to the overwhelming pile of posthumous J Dilla compilations. Put together by the producer's mother, Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey, it contains 19 "rare + remastered" beats -- just over half-an-hour's worth of episodic instrumentals -- and a dutiful J-Rocc mix based on them, slightly shorter in duration. As with most of the Dilla releases commercially issued since February 2006, there's no knowing whether the producer intended to have any of this material, in this form, available commercially. In terms of quality, this is strictly completist and/or Yancey family financial supporter territory. Some of it recirculates pre-Donuts beat tape material previously heard only by those who either received a copies from the maker or heard dubs and uploads. Other tracks became the basis of official and earlier posthumous output. "Motor City 12," for instance, is a raw segment of "The Anthem," off The Diary. Anyone who knows Mos Def's The Ecstatic will recognize "Motor City 9," while "Motor City 3" features some of the elements heard on Jay Stay Paid highlight "Lazer Gunne Funke." Long-familiar interjections from Doom (over sirens) and Ad-Rock in some odd way validate this release while further diluting the core discography of a genius."--Allmusic.com.
