- Falling / by Ahrnstedt, Simona,author.(CARDINAL)626766; Menzies, Alice,translator.(CARDINAL)429826;
"Alexander de la Grip is known in the tabloids and gossip blogs as a rich, decadent, jet-setting playboy who spends most of his days recovering from the night before. With a string of beautiful conquests, he seems to care about nothing and no one. Isobel Sørensen has treated patients in refugee camps and war zones, and is about to depart Sweden for a pediatric hospital in Chad. Devoted to her humanitarian work, she cares almost too deeply. Especially when she learns that Alexander is withholding desperately needed funds from her aid foundation. Is it because she's the only woman who ever told him to go to hell? As the two push each other's boundaries to the breaking point, the truth turns out to be much more complicated. Pain, love, trust, betrayal. Which will triumph when safety is nothing but an empty word?"--

- North Carolina Transportation Museum Foundation power house restoration \ by North Carolina Transportation Museum.(CARDINAL)211679;
The old Southern Railway power plant, nicknamed the Power House, at the Historic Spencer Shops was originally constructed in 1896. Two additions were built in 1905 and 1926. In 1962, the Southern Railway shut down the Power House due to the dieselization of its fleet and because there was little use for the amount of power generated by the facility. It is now recognized that the power plant needs to be restored, both to provide space for the electro-mechanical equipment to serve other buildings on the site, and as space for static display of the machinery, boilers, and associated equipment that "powered" the site. The report details the work completed as of April 2004, and plans (updated on September 12, 2005) for the next two phases of the restoration and conservation of this historic site.

- Republican character : from Nixon to Reagan / by Critchlow, Donald T.,1948-author.(CARDINAL)179380;
Includes bibliographical references and index."Politics makes for strange bedfellows," the old saying goes. Americans, however, often forget the obvious lesson underlying this adage: politics is about winning elections and governing once in office. Voters of all stripes seem put off by the rough-and-tumble horse-trading and deal-making of politics, viewing its practitioners as self-serving and without principle or conviction. <p> Because of these perspectives, the scholarly and popular narrative of American politics has come to focus on ideology over all else. But as Donald T. Critchlow demonstrates in his riveting new book, this obsession obscures the important role of temperament, character, and leadership ability in political success. Critchlow looks at four leading Republican presidential contenders--Richard Nixon, Nelson Rockefeller, Barry Goldwater, and Ronald Reagan--to show that, behind the scenes, ideology mattered less than principled pragmatism and the ability to build coalitions toward electoral and legislative victory.

A prime target for the fierce storms that develop in the Atlantic, the region is especially vulnerable because of its shallow, gradually sloping sea floor and low-lying coastline." "With an eye on both natural and built environments, Walter Fraser's narrative ranges from the first documented storm in 1686 to recent times in describing how the low-country has endured some of the severest effects of wind and water. This chronology of the most notable lowcountry storms is also a useful primer on the basics of hurricane dynamics."--Jacket.
