Summary, etc.: After the tumultuous years of World War II, Americans increasingly turned toward the family as a source of enjoyment. Middle-class suburban families spent time together pursuing recreational activities such as swimming in public pools. It is noteworthy, however, that in this pre-Civil Rights era, many public pools were either segregated or designated "whites only".
